Columbus also has cap space to bury an insured contract for an injury prone player player. A guy like Smid for example.
Not saying that is near enough, but it is another "asset" they bring to the table.
I still don't know how they get it done though.

The top 3 are head and shoulders above the rest IMO. Matthews looks to be a franchise forward. Laine looks like he's going to be an elite player and so does Pull-an-RV. Dubois is big, plays with an edge, can play all 3 forward positions and plays a 200ft game. Chychrun to me looks like the best defender but that's just my POV. I think he's stepping it up when he has to and he plays more of a style that I like or that I see the Flames going for. I'm sure some of the other guys are really good too but after the top 3, my preference is Dubois both because of his style and because he fills a need for the Flames and then Chychrun just looks like a better player than the remain forwards and I remember reading that he did play some forward this past year too.

I don't think it's realistic either but let's not pretend guys like Saad, Jenner, Wennberg don't have huge trade value. Werenski is one of the best dmen prospects outside the NHL. They have extra prospects like Kerby Rychel too. They have the assets to do it but the price would be too insane IMO

Sure the BJ's have a lot of smaller pieces to offer but would you take a package of those guys for one of the Finns? I know I wouldn't, especially for Laine.
Wait....if Columbus gets the second overall pick and vancouver gets the third, they could offer up a bunch of stuff and make it happen.

I could see Benning trading 3 for a package around Saad and a young prospect. Mainly because I think he's a little slow and the Aquilinis don't seem interested in a rebuild.
I don't see the other teams doing it though. Maybe Arizona, but that's going to be a pretty risky move for a brand new GM.

Smaller pieces? They have two of the defencemen named first to the U23 World Cup team in a league where good, young dmen are worth a mint. They have a blazing fast 30 goal scorer in Saad who is only 23. They have 6'2, 215 lb 23 year old physical 30 goal scorer with leadership in Boone Jenner. Werenski is one of the top 10 prospects outside the NHL Wennberg is a former 1st rounder who has done nothing but impress and looks like a top two line centre.
None of those are smaller pieces.

Scouting reports. What I've read and seen in highlights of each player. To me Dubois plays with more of an edge than most and doesn't rely on his size, as for Chychrun I just like his play from what I've seen. I guess I'm not certain that any player will be in the NHL...Is that what you're asking?

WOuld you take any one of those guys 1 for 1 over Laine or Pulljajarvi? If the answer is no, then those guys are smaller pieces because they're "smaller" than the other 2. I didn't mean they weren't good. To me, those guys are all good but I'd still take either of the Finns over them. As for packaging them all up, I still don't think I'd trade either of the Finns at this point. But that's just me.

I'm still of the mindset that it's: Matthews, Laine, Pull-an-RV, Dubois, Chychrun, Tkchuck, Nylander.... The Flames should be able to get one of those guys

I can see them wanting both Finns because they're good, but it's not like they're a mind-melded package deal like the Sedins. I can't see them selling the farm to do this

Just call him 'Jesse' if spelling something you've read multiple times before is a difficult concept.

Seriously, if the Flames select a defenseman with their first pick in this draft I'm going to be pissed. With Giordano signed for another seven years, Brodie and Hamilton as your young core, Jokipakka just added, then having Wotherspoon and Kulak knocking on the door, Andersson, Kyllington, Hickey, Culkin and Sieloff all on the horizon, while you still have long shots like Rafikov, and Mattsson in the pipe, adding another seems really stupid, especially when the biggest need on this team is a top 6 forward.
There are some really good forwards available. Take a crack at a good forward. If the guy you want is a little lower down the list, and when I say the list I mean Bob McKenzie's list that most think is the gospel according to what teams are picking from, trade down and try to pick up another pick. Winnipeg (CHI-26), Carolina (LA-23) and Arizona (NYR-22) all have two first round picks. If the guy they like is available lower, trade down for another first.
|
I get what you are saying and its true that our depth in defensemen and centres are much, much, greater than our depth at wing. But best player available may come in at some point. If Dubois/Tkachuk went 4th/5th and they Chychrun is the highest guy left on their list (lets say he's top 5 for the Flames) then you can happily pick him. Young defensemen can be traded to solve any current problems on the roster. Having an excess of them will never be a problem.
Biggest thing for me is that Chychrun is a defenseman unlike what we have in the system. While we have a critical mass of young d-men prospects, I think only a few of them have top 3 potential (Kylington and Andersson most likely). And those two guys are puck moving, puck rushing style d-men. Chychrun would give us a big, strong, mobile, physical all around d-man who can shoot, pass, rush the puck, defend and hit. Arguably we don't have that in our top 4 unless Hamilton continues to improve on his physicality. A top 4 long term of Brodie, Hamilton, Gio and Chychrun could be amongst the best in the league. Chychrun could replace Giordano long term.
If Chychrun has Ekblad type upside then he's a fine pick regardless of our depth at that position. If they think he's closer to a Bogosian then I think we would prioritize forward over him. Hard to tell how much the Flames might like Juolevi or Sergachev, for all we know they might be the top d-men.
Basically what this comes down to is where the Flames scouts see the draft tiers, how close the players in the 4-9 range are and how they tiebreak those close players. There could be scenarios where the top guy left on their list is a defensemen so be prepared to be pissed. That said I think there's a good chance a defenseman goes in the 4-5 range and one of the top forwards in the second tier could fall to us at #6. If we're drafting 7th I think there's a decent chance one or two d-men will go in the 4-6th range.
