Yep. It seems like a crazy place to go, but there are actually people going there for tourism all the time and, just based on my anecdotal experience of hearing people talk about it, NK tourism is more and more common every year. Stick within the rules and I don't think there's a high chance of trouble.

It is worth repeating "You'll be fine if you just follow instruction and don't do anything stupid".
This fellow was a Young Pioneer tourist.

Young Pioneer is well regarded but caters to a younger group and seems to use partying and drinking in North Korea as a marketing tool. This guy was a frat boy from the U of Virginia so I think alcohol may have had a lot to do with his decision making.

I don't know if this is true or NK propaganda, but in the article...

Quote:
In his comments, Warmbier said he was offered a used car worth $10,000 by a member of the church.
He said the church member told him the slogan would be hung on its wall as a trophy. He also said he was told that if he was detained and didn't return, $200,000 would be paid to his mother in the form of a charitable donation.
Seems to be true. NK wouldn't make up weird things like this. The CIA etc stuff, maybe though. Pardon the pun, but that should a red flag in terms of what you're doing is risky.

This reminds me of stupid things Americans do in foreign country, like that guy who got sentenced to cane slashes when he vandalized cars in Singapore 20-some years ago.

Americans think they are above the law and everyone else should follow their way...many world conflicts can be resolved if Americans can STFU!

If possible, that's a more bigoted and naive statement than the bigoted stereotype you placed on the subject of your rant! Kudos for out-bigoting your subject matter!

That guy has the worst German name ever.
Maybe second worst to "Adolf Warmbier"

Good luck, safe travels, and from what I've read in the news recently, don't touch anything.

Screw the naysayers! Do the same thing you do visiting any country (be respectful and polite, follow the rules, and leave your judgement in the hotel room) and you'll be totally fine. I thought about making a quick trip in NK the last time I was in Beijing but it was too big of a hassle for the amount of time I had.

I want to see a full trip report afterward.

You won't get to see the real North Korea. You'll see a very filtered version of the country and only what your "guides" will allow you to see. Quite personally, I just don't see the appeal. Travel should be about experiencing culture. If you can't travel freely in the country, how can you do that. The only thing you'll see is the inside of some apartment block designed for foreigners and a supervised view of minor portions of anything outside of that. Not being able to have an unfiltered conversation with locals? It all sounds to me like being on the worst cruise ship in the world as opposed to an actual "experience".

If you're travelling that far, there are lots of more interesting places to go in Asia.
Well when you visit North Korea and can't travel freely, are told lies, and given a filtered view I would argue that you ARE experiencing the culture of that country.

The citizens there are living through that same experience, sadly most of them are doing so in extreme poverty, without the ability to go back to freedom at the end of the trip.

Anyway, I'll be sure to post some pics (If they aren't all deleted on exit), and post a trip report when I get back for those interested.

Buy Made in North Korea souvenir goods? Or anything made there in general?

Sounds like an interesting and cool trip.

This is not something I would like to do, therefore, it is dumb that anyone else should want to do it.
