It GMG when people think "slower traffic keep right" means "people going under the speed limit, keep right".
It doesn't. I usually drive 10-20% over the limit, but I will always move over when someone comes up behind me going faster than me. I even manage to do it without acting like i'm holier than they are. It's just common courtesy.

In order to avoid the stress of having to wonder if I'm supposed to be in the right lane or the left lane, I just straddle the lane markers at all times.

So if you are passing someone or a whole group of cars, and you are going, say 120 and someone comes up behind you at 140, do you accelerate to complete your pass, or continue at your speed?

Depends on how rapidly I am passing the cars on the right. If I'm doing 120 and they are doing 115 and it is a slow overtake, I'll definitely speed up or just abandon the pass and move over.
If the speed difference between me and the cars I am passing is significant enough that I am rapidly passing them and the guy behind me is only going to get held of for a few seconds, I won't accelerate at all.
His right to pass me does not trump drumpf my right to pass them.

I'll assume that's directed at me.
If I'm comfortable going faster, I'll accelerate to make it easier on the other driver. Otherwise, I'll continue at the speed I'm going and then move over when it's safe. I've never had someone get mad at me for that.

I've never seen people doing the speed limit in the left lane of a highway or freeway, unless there's so much traffic there's no room in the right lane(s). The most common scenario is a 110 limit, cars in the right lane doing around 115, and cars in the left lane passing them doing around 120-125. Then the occasional driver doing 130+ drives up to the bumper of those doing 120. Like I said, I'll get out of the way. But let's not pretend left lanes are there to ensure those driving 20+ over the limit are never impeded.

I would love to take the people in this thread that don't know how to drive and plop them into a car any where else in the world and watch them get torn apart by other drivers and police.
Frankly wording it "Slower Traffic Keep Right" was a mistake. It should be "Keep Right Except to Pass". That way you eliminate the strugglers interpretation that "slower traffic" some how translates to "traffic going less than the speed limit" and not you know... slower traffic.
It is getting better though. I remember when I first started driving it seemed like you'd get stuck behind Left lane strugglers all the time. Now I'd say it's a lot more rare. What isn't getting better is people not waiting for the faster traffic to pass before they get in the left lane i.e. they'll cut off someone going 125 to pass someone at 110.
If it was worded "Keep Right except to Pass" you could enforce Autobahn style rules where no one is allowed to linger in the left lane. The moment you are done passing you have to get over or you get a ticket. European police will give you a ticket for being a left lane struggler waaaaaaay before giving someone a speeding ticket. It's also illegal to pass on the right. That's the way it should be. Going 130 isn't that dangerous, but messing up the flow of traffic is.

When It Comes To Driving, Most People Think Their Skills are Above Average
http://www.psychologicalscience.org/...e-average.html
As predicted, across all experiments participants believed that they were exceptional drivers—but only according to their own definitions of good driving.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Illusory_superiority
Svenson (1981) surveyed 161 students in Sweden and the United States, asking them to compare their driving skills and safety to other people. For driving skills, 93% of the U.S. sample and 69% of the Swedish sample put themselves in the top 50%; for safety, 88% of the U.S. and 77% of the Swedish put themselves in the top 50%.[26]
McCormick, Walkey and Green (1986) found similar results in their study, asking 178 participants to evaluate their position on eight different dimensions of driving skills (examples include the "dangerous–safe" dimension and the "considerate–inconsiderate" dimension). Only a small minority rated themselves as below the median, and when all eight dimensions were considered together it was found that almost 80% of participants had evaluated themselves as being an above-average driver.[27]
One commercial survey showed that 36% of drivers believed they were an above-average driver while texting or sending emails compared to other drivers; 44% considered themselves average, and 18% below average.[28]

It was more a general question, but thanks. I'll sometimes accelerate a bit if it is a long pass I am doing, to let the guy behind know I'm not interested in being in his way but I'm not going to haul to get out of his way if I'm already speeding.

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but my recollection of being on the Autobahns was that they were all at least 6 lanes (3 each way)- if not more. So going down to just 4 lanes makes a difference. Travel only allowed in one lane would bog down traffic so much.

I feel like being obsessed with and worshiping Europe as if it is some heaven on earth where only angels live is a right of passage for most young people.
In Polak's case it has been going on for about 4 years now. He'll grow out of it eventually. Some kids just take longer to mature.

This has been said before in other threads I'm sure, but the best way to drive up the QEII is to throw on your cruise control to 110, plant yourself in the right lane, and enjoy driving nirvana. You'll probably only have to pass a hand full of cars on your total trip - the drive is so much more enjoyable.

I seam to remember Highway 13 south of Berlin being 4 lanes. No streetview there so I can't confirm.

Weird. I always presumed it was 15% or 10 kmph whichever is lower, but for practical reasons, don't do 11 kmph or over unless highway, then maaaaybe 15 kmph or over the cops won't bug you.
It at least seems like most photo radars peg people going 11 kmph and over.

I'd agree. I find it sad that people with licenses are impressed I can do a parallel park. Seriously speaking, we had to pass that portion of a test to get a license. It's literally in the same realm of the people impressed I can do basic math without a calculator or stare at me like I'm an alien because I know how to do long division.
Spacial and situation awareness stuff is also horribly at low levels. This part is easily determined by asking, "Hey, remember the part in the license test where you had to keep saying all the potential hazards you were driving past?" There's the "It was so stupid, it was a joke." crowd and the "It was hard, I couldn't find anything to say." crowd. The latter often IMO suffers from terrifying levels of tunnel vision when driving.
It's sad that the majority of people can be impressed by basic skills.

There are 2 lane stretches of the autobahn. We drove in southern Germany, around Stuttgart and Munich, and I distinctly remember having to move over because I'd look in my rear view mirror one second and see no one and then 5 seconds later, there would be a car right on my tail. Surprisingly, most drivers don't go faster than 120.

My friend says the best way is to sit a safe distance behind a semi. No one will cut you off then. Sounds like a good strategy.
