What to do with Mason Raymond?
Yes, everyone's forgotten forward. Well, he can't be forgotten about for much longer. He only managed 5 points in 29 games with the Flames, but has put up 15 points in 15 games for the Heat. He seems to have taken his demotion well and not sulked, getting stuck in with the Heat. I think that shows great character.
But, what does Treliving do with Raymond now? With it being a contract year and Raymond playing for his NHL future, he could still have something to offer. He is only a season removed from a 0.5 ppg pace.
For me, he has 4 options. He gives Mason one last chance to make the big team, giving him a chance to strike up some chemistry with Monahan/Gaudreau or Bennett in training camp.
Trades him for whatever he can get. But who would want him without us retaining salary? Is a trade even viable?
Buy out. Do we really want him dimished buy out hit stuck on the books for 2 years though? I'm thinking we don't. But what happens if Raymond is fed up and demands a move away. Is Treliving forced to give him a buy out?
Keeps him around, but with an idea of having him down with the Heat as soon as the players report back. So, that means building an NHL roster for the opening day that doesn't involve Raymond and put him back down at the first opportunity.
So, what would you do with him? What should Brad do with him? What is realistic?

Meh, try to play him. If he doesn't cut it, well, sayonara Mason.

I would suggest Treliving asks his buddy Don Maloney for a favor to take a servicable vet off our hands....but...

Keep him in Stockton. He can be a veteran guy down there.

I would have voted "trade him" but I don't think that's possible without taking back an equally bad contract.

He's in a contract year, see if he can play one more time.
Give him one last chance, a la Setoguchi.

"Fire him into the sun" should be a poll option.
Since it's not maybe they can loan him to a euro team? That's happened before hasn't it?

I think he stays in Stockton and ownership will eat his salary till his contract is up.

What'd the sun ever do to you, all I've seen on this board is "Fire xyz into the sun", if we keep firing things that suck into the sun, its going to collapse into a quantum singularity and everyone's greed and malice and desire to fire sh%% into the sun is going to kill everyone.
Thanks alot

Powerplay Quarterback

I'd imagine that he would be very motivated in training camp. If he has anything left, we will see it in camp. If not, he can play out his contract in Stockton.
There are a few players who before camp it should be made very clear to them that they are playing for their NHL jobs. Jooris and Bouma come to mind off the top of my head.
I am not a fan of buy outs or retaining salary. Best to just tough it out with a bad contract IMO.

don't get me wrong, I'd even take "future considerations" as return. I just don't see it happening, sadly.

For his career's sake he better take the offseason seriously this time around and actually work to be on an NHL roster, or he will be retired by the age of 31. Coming into training camp and stating he hasn't worked on anything is not going to cut it.
Calgary benefits from a Mason Raymond who plays like he did in 2010-11 or 2013-14. He now knows that his contract does not protect him from the minors.

Don't think there's room for the guy now with how some of the young players have shown they can do at least equal or better than what Raymond has done.
Find a way to move him.

Lets see what training camp brings, but I think if trading him was an option they would have already.
No hurry to buy him out either imo. If he plays well, let him play in Calgary. If not, he can play in Stockton. Just don't let him suck for half a year before putting him in the A, if he's going to have a chance in the NHL he has to produce, or go. End of story.
Really sucks that he had that back injury. Was a good player. I am rooting for the guy
