Honorable mentions to Julien Gauthier and German Rubtsov. Kind of hoping Rubtsov drops to the Dallas pick and the Flames get that pick.
Wow, Tkachuk, Chychrun and Dubois at 8, 9, and 10?

I know some people have problems with one or 2 of these guys, but all 3? Or are you just really high on the other guys? I would be happy to get any of them.

My order would be:

1. Matthews
2. Laine
3. Puljujarvi
4. Chychrun
5. Tkachuk
6. Dubois
7. Nylander
8. Juolevi
9. Sergachyov
10. Bean/Gauthier

I don't think McLeod will go top 10, even though I think he's a solid prospect.

Well, using your 32 goal mark as the minimum requirement for going top five that clearly defines the players. The top five eligible players are De Brincat (51), Dubois (42), Gauthier (41), Abramov (38), and Mascherin (35). Out of their positions are Tkachuk (30) and Nylander (28). Can't score 32 goals you have no business being in the top 5 picks!

Thankfully there is a lot more that goes into judging top end talent than just an arbitrary measure of points scored. There are other things that make you a great prospect. Hall scored a bunch in junior, and he's a horrible hockey player. Yakupov scored a ton too, and he's got a first class ticket to Bustville. I hope our scouts don't get locked in on a statistic and use it as a mark for players to hit. I hope they review all these guys and base their selection on their talent and whether they think they will be good players in the NHL. There are some good players out there that didn't hit 32 goals.
I'm not setting any minimum requirements. Just wanted to research the numbers for interesting conversation.

I'd be perfectly happy with Tkachuk or Nylander in the top 5 if the Flames scouts like them there despite them not hitting 32 goals. And I'm not saying McLeod isn't a great prospect. If the Flames had weak depth at centre he'd probably be one of the guys I'd be cheerleading because I think centre is a more important position than winger. But centre is arguably our biggest strength organizationally. I think we'd take a franchise centre (Matthews) if we get him. But if we're sitting at 6 or 7 with our pick of the rest of the secondary tier I think the Flames won't grab a guy who most people think has elite 2nd line centre upside. We've already got a potential 1st line centre in Bennett to play 2nd line. And we've already got a guy who is producing at elite 2nd line numbers in Backlund who can play 3rd line for us. And after all that we've Jankowski who I think has elite 2nd line centre upside as well.

If we had two less of those centres I'd probably be hoping and praying for McLeod at #6/7. But we're set at centre for hopefully a decade. This draft gives us the chance to grab a top two line winger or top 3 defenseman who is equally as attractive a prospect as McLeod or moreso. I'm arguing that McLeod is less attractive to us because of our depth at centre. It could edge him down on our list slightly because of our huge need for size/skill combination at the wing or a dman with top 3 potential. The #4-9 prospects look so close you can massage the list positionally to fit your needs.

It's preference. I like Sergachyev the most out of the D men. Really dont think there's that much of gap between Chychrun and the other two to clearly identify who is best. Pick your poison with any of them, they all look good.

I really really like McLeod and Nylander. Big time. I don't like highly ranked guys like Tkachuk who are surrounded by powerhouse teams. Something tells me his numbers are inflated. He didn't pique my interest as much as I thought he would lining up with Matthews in the WJC.

Dubois is hit and miss for me. Numbers are great, size is great. Intangibles are there but I keep thinking "Mantha" in the back of my head. Kind of sketchy on CDN talent from the Q. And his line in CB is deadly.

Cruises in is an understatement. In the second replay he just stands there with one hand on his stick watching the battle behind the net. I've never seen a player look so uninvolved then wham one-timer into the back of the net.

The 4-10 spots seem so potentially hit or miss. This is why I'm so hope we have 1-3, but especially 1 or 2. Can luck go our way just this one time, please?

NHL central scouting final rankings coming out today:

No surprise for Euro Skaters it is 1. Matthews 2. Laine 3. Puljujarvi

Quote:
Stubb said there isn't much separating the top three international skaters.

"Any one of these three could go first," Stubb said. "Depending on if a team needs a complete center [Matthews], an excellent, hard-working forward [Puljujarvi] or a sniper who is also a playmaker [Laine]."
https://www.nhl.com/news/auston-matt...?tid=277764372

Looks like NA skaters are ranked:

1. Dubois
2. Tkachuk
3. Nylander
4. Chychrun
5. Juolevi

Quote:
Dubois, a 6-foot-2, 202-pound forward, is versatile enough to play all three forward spots but appears most comfortable at center. He was third in the QMJHL with 99 points, fifth with 42 goals and sixth with 57 assists in 62 games. He also won 50.4 percent of his faceoffs.

"If you need someone to check the other team's top line and be a shut-down forward, he's a guy who can do that," NHL Director of Central Scouting Dan Marr said. "If you need someone to generate scoring opportunities, he has the skill, speed and hands to do that too. He's a very all-around player."

Dubois is the first QMJHL player since Sidney Crosby of Rimouski in 2005 to be No. 1 on Central Scouting's final ranking of North American skaters.

Why is Matthews a European skater? Just because he played in Switzerland?

Huh.

No it isn't. Central Scouting always divides the players by where the player is playing not their nationality. They have had Matthews as a Euro skater the whole season.

Yeah, I edited my post accordingly. I guess it's because he's been playing in Switzerland all year, right?

Yep, no different than Juolevi or any of the other Europeans that come over to play in the CHL

Charlie McAvoy being ranked above Sergachev is surprising

Meh not a big fan of CSS. I'd love to hear their reasoning for some of these rankings.

Logan Brown over Sergachev is a real head scratcher to me. I watched these guys all year and vehemently disagree..

How many scouts are employed by CSS? does anyone know?

So we've got some risers and fallers from the midterms

Rising is Dubois 6 spots, Brown 7 spots

Falling is Gauthier 8 spots and McLeod 7 spots (to #13 in NA!)

McKeens seems very much alone in their assessment of McLeod being top 5 worthy.

Brown would be one of those "projection" picks from what I can tell. Huge skilled centre with good skating. He's got massive upside if he puts it all together. For him the scouts would be more looking at how much room he has to grow as a player. Everybody would love 6'6 top two line centre.

That would be your classic project pick. Years away, needs to learn how to use his size to dominate.

Not sure I'd have him over Sergachev either but he was going to be a dark horse of mine to go top 10 because of his size, skill, skating combo. Big centres don't last long on draft day.

Sound like someone familiar? J.C maybe... Anyways I agree with your analysis of their reasoning.

Seems like the biggest riser from the midterm rankings on the top 50 is Cam Dineen (117 to 39), biggest dropper is Simon Stransky (25 to 48). Anyone got any insight on either of these guys?

Laine continues to the finals, Puljujärvi free to join the U18 team now. Pretty quiet game from the draft eligible pair.

Thanks Henry! I was waiting for some kind of highlights from the game today and I'm a little disapointed that neither of the 2 did anything amazing in a game 7.

I"m guessing Pull-an-RV dominates at the U18 and Laine will be tournament MVP in his tournament.

Frankly I should hope so if he's playing against 7 year olds...

well if I wanted to boost my rating, I'd play where I knew I'd be the best.

Kinda like Kramer in his Karate class....
