Could the Astros win the Central?
Considering not to long ago they were 8.5 games back. I love the Astros but didn't expect them to come back from that! Now only 1.5 games back of the Cards for the division, could they do it? The Astros finally look like the team they should have been since the beginning of the season, but what's up with the Cards?
Who wins the central people????

Astros are on a 7 game win streak, Cards, a 7 game losing streak.
This would go down as one of the biggest collapses of all time.
And just because I want to see that happen, I say go Astros go!

I think the Cards hold on. The Cards are too good to miss out and the Astros are too bad to make it.
Either way I think both teams are out in the first round. The Astros have guys right now playing way over their head and when they get to the play-offs I think they will come back down to earth.
The Cards, other than Pujols, are all playing awful and I am not sure they can get it together in time to win the first round.

Well I suspected the Cards might fold given that they were looking at a few injuries going down the stretch. But I didn't think their collapse would be this monumental. I mean it's not like Houston was playing that good at the start of the month, it's only recently that they've done anything. This would definitely be a melt down reminiscant of the 87 Blue Jays though.

This is getting better,
Yesterday the Astro's rallied with 2 outs in the 9th to tie the game, then won it in the 15th inning. Today, they won their 9th straight game 3-0 over Pittsburgh. Currently, the Cardinals trail the Brewers 8-1 in the 4th inning. If the Cards end up on the losing end, it will be a virtual tie (0.5 games seperating the 2 teams).
Go Astros!

Looks like the Cardinals are going to lose for sure now.
Man has there ever been some exciting baseball of late, last night the Phillys game was insane, as was the Astro's comeback. I love this time of year

Maybe somebody knows something that I don't...please fill me in.
The Cards are 81-77, with 3 games left to play.
The Astros are 81-78, also with 3 games left to play.
Did the Cards have a game cancelled and no make-up scheduled? If so, how ticked will the Astros be if they lose by 0.5 games. Just 1 extra loss by the Cardinals in that case would equal a tie.

The Cards would have to play the Giants on Monday, to makeup for a game lost during the season, if it means anything (or maybe they do, regardless if it means something, not sure) to the playoffs.

Makes sense, thanks.
Could be a pretty exciting finish.

They only make it up if it means something.
If the Cards got into that situation and did not win I think they should fire LaRussa on the spot.
They should make it in as one of these days one of the pitchers has to pitch well and the Astros are done playing the Pirates who were awful in that series.

It is looking like a good possibility that game will have to be played. Potentially with a one game playoff afterward. I wonder how they would schedule that?

Well if the Tigers and Twins finish with the exact same record I keep hearing that the Tigers hold the tie breaker. But if the Cards and Astro's finish tied would they have to hold a playoff game to determine the division champion, or would they use a similar tie breaking scenario like they would with the AL central. Or does the series record only come into play if both teams make the playoffs like the Twins and Tigers.
As bad as the NL is, at least the race is entertaining.

Excellent.
My Giants can knock out the Dodgers and the Cardinals this week-end.

The single game to decide who gets in is one of the most exciting things in sport. 162 game schedule and it comes down to one head to head game. I love it.
This is why I would be supportive of the NHL instituting some sort of extend playoff schedule that included a mini round between #8 and #9. Best of 3. Maybe even just a single game.

If it came down to a single game, the Astros won the coin toss so a playoff game would be played in Houston.

Card's magic number to clinch is 1 after a 3-2 win over the brewers today.

Where would this rank in baseball comebacks/colapses. It has been a big drop by the Cards. The whole NL is looking very week this year.
