I think Fleury would be traded before Murray but I think some fans are getting a little caught up in garbage time play. I'm not saying Backlund can't play this way next season but I would not be surprised the least if he falls back into a 30 point player that goes through streaks of inconsistency that we have seen throughout his career.

There's Fleury talk in the Murray thread.

Hamilton is having a really good year but how much better would he be if he had more GRIT?

It was partially this, sure. But it was primarily that the Flames play a very different system than Boston defensively, and he was not at all comfortable with it for a while. He said as much.

The Bruins play a box-out system. The Flames play a get-sticks-in-the-lanes, passive system that he really struggled with for a while.

Is that not the CORE of the Flames future??

Others had career years too but it doesn't really make sense to count the Ferlands and the Bennetts quite yet. Although Bennett with 18 goals and 18 assists, 36 points is pretty awesome too.

Things are looking bright!
Colborne a core player? A few weeks ago he was a healthy scratch. I'm sorry, he's had a good run here but the last two years he has been essentially on the outside looking in with the roster. I'm not touching him long term or for much of a pay raise if I'm Treliving with the other big deals the organization needs to afford.

What surprises me the most about Hamilton is his shooting ability. He get's so many pucks through to the net it never ceases to amaze me. I wouldn't be surprised to see him score 20 goals in this league VERY soon.

I am not dismissing the urgency to acquire a solid goaltender this summer. I am simply not at all convinced that a deal would require the movement of Backjlund in a trade, nor should it. The Flames need him right now, and probably for the next two or three years.
I think 9th pick is very good value for Backlund. The 9th pick got Schneider. If Schneider was on the Flames this past year vs. Backlund, I suspect they would have a much better record.

I know that's an imperfect analysis but the original question was about the return for goalies. Schneider fetched a high first round pick. Jones fetched a first and a prospect. Miller fetched a first at the deadline.

Backlund is important to this team but if you can trade your 3rd line center for a franchise goalie and fill your biggest need it's kind of a no brainer isn't it?

He has been at worst a 0.5ppg player for each of the last 4 seasons. As long as he can stay healthy (which has always been the biggest question) then he is at least a 40 point player.

He only regresses into a 30 point player again if he ends up running into injury issues again. The injury issues which have been the largest source of his inconsistencies.

Your assessment of that franchise is off.

"Oilers can only reminiscence about having a defenseman score 43 points in the 80s"
