God forbid a company give people what they want in an attempt to make money.

I mean, I'm still going to see it.

So can we all agree that this movie will suck unless there are mass Bothan deaths?

I don't know if I agree, I'm a bit torn, but I think that in terms of these types of movies that they are almost like origin movies, so you need one touchstone character that links it to the universe as a whole.
I mean, if you're going to have a Han Solo movie, chances are your going to get either the intro of Chewie or Bobba Fett.
With Leia, I would think that you would see Palpatine
With Luke, it would be Biggs.
I think that we can agree would be a crucial project for the Empire, its their decisive stroke to crush the rebellion forever. So having Vader show up to not only make sure its secure but on time and one budget is important.
In fact I would love a scene where Vader is in the project managers officer ripping into some nameless accountant about being over budget on tracker beam emmitters and then mumbling about the Emperor not being as forgiving as he is.
I kid. But we also want to see that link and understand that Vader at this point as a character is not the Vader that we see emerging in ESB that was conflicted and with a spark of good in him. We also want to see how Vader lives in a world where he believes that he is the last of the Jedi.
We never got to see Vader at his height of power in ANH or ESB or ROTJ. We certainly have seen hints at the unforgiving angry hate filled man in Rebels, but we do want to see more.

I didn't pick up on it until I took another look through IMDB, but the actress that played Mon Montha was the same actress that played her in ROTS.

You need touchstones, but it doesn't need to be Vader. Everyone knows the Death Star, Mon Mothma is there. A story about spies stealing Death Star plans doesn't need Darth Vader, and as a result it could feel forced.
A Han movie is obviously different, those characters are going to be there.

Why wouldn't you include one of the key characters that oversees the construction of the death star in a movie all about the death star?

this movie can easily be great without Vader, but if they insist on shoehorning him in there, I hope his portrayal is more true to A New Hope, where he's some big a-hole in a robot suit that does dirty work for the high ranking imperial officers (like the one guy who mocked Vader's sorcerer's ways until he got choked out).
Vader as Space Jesus is a thing that happened to cater to his growing popularity. the fewer recognizable faces in Rogue One, the better, because then there will actually be suspense about their eventual fates. not like the prequels where I didn't give a crap cause I knew exactly who was or wasn't going to make it.

They are ... Tarkin is in the movie
I kind of doubt a Sith Lord is too involved in the day to day of a construction project.

He might be yeah, he probably will if TFA is any indication. I'm just saying it's not needed.

I got that, but it seems like an odd gripe. Maybe you are pining for stand alone star wars movies which is fine, but IMO it would be odd without him there seeing how big of a role he played throughout.

the Death Star assembly shot was cool, but on 2nd viewing I laughed at how fast they were moving that superlaser dish in. that thing's gotta be like 50km across and it looks like it's just getting plugged in as casually as a USB jack. geez I get that you're pretty advanced but try to be more careful with that expensive equipment.

a shot from the Vader fetish prequels, which TFA and hopefully future movies have all agreed to ignore. remember what he said about that Death Star..."don't be too proud of this technological terror you have constructed". does that sound like a guy who was intimately involved with the thing, like it was his labor of love? I'd say the guy he choked during that meeting probably had a lot more to do with Death Star assembly, along with his fellow officers.

I was kinda laughing at that same thought. I think it would be hilarious if they showed this massive super laser floating in space and they slowly slide it in and there's one tiny cable at the end that slides in. You go into the shaft that they slide the laser in and you see a technician grab a power cord and plug it into a power socket, and suddenly this thing is live.

No, I would agree. But he was there and he was involved in capturing the rebels after they stole the plans and interrogating Leia to try and re-obtain them. All I'm saying is that it would be an odd omission and that it's not like they are shoe-horning him into this movie to broaden the appeal.

Here's the argument to that. This was Sidious' grand project. He wanted the ultimate terror weapon to be able to go around and destroy anything that got in his way of restructuring the galaxy, you know his whole peace and order mandate that he was elected on.
While the Death Star was pretty much Tarkin's baby, I'm pretty sure that the Emperor is going to have his biggest and most ruthless killing machine there to make sure that things go the way they're meant to go.

Well that's kind of the thing though. He went after the rebels, he was an attack dog, not a Project Manager.
Even if he was always on the Death Star, do the spies need to break into the Death Star to steal the plans for the Death Star? It's quite likely they stole them from someone else. Maybe from the desk of some engineer at Kuat Drive Yards or something

Why wouldn't they just google the plans,
I mean they have a Chinese person on their team, couldn't he hack the Imperial Database (This always bugs me by the way, because they always talk about it as if the government has one database. I'd hate to be the guy that has to maintain those tables, and what if the SQL server goes down . . . )
I always laugh at the thought of these poor rebel engineers who get this battle station plan that's 120 km's around, is probably the largest collection of wiring, conduits, armor reactors, weapons and trenches and guns etc ever seen. Probably a plan so complex that half the guys don't know how it works.
And they find one unshielded exhaust port 2 meters across at the end of one of probably thousands of access trenches.
And they find that weakness in a day.
Personally, if I was a rebel, it would be like, we're evacuating the whole rebellion to hide out on Curuscant, that pretty much removes the threat of the death star doesn't it?
Yeah come out and blast your home planet you #######s, with all of your infrastructure and the Emperors museum quality collection of Twi'lik porn.
