Sure you need some... but the way I see it when the Flames signed Grant they hadn't yet traded for Freddie Hamilton or demoted Mason Raymond. Those two are tweeners enough for the Flames/Heat and the reserve list slot that Grant would take up is more valuable then having a third.

Not similar players at all. Grant brings size, strength and face-offs. Who else in the organization has that skill set? Nobody? And we need more size and strength and face-off prowess.

I think they'll try to re-sign Grant for sure.

Didn't say they were... except that they're all tweeners. We only have a certain number of slots and we have (on the AHL side) at least 6 guys coming in. Someones gotta go... if Grant will take an AHL deal I'll happily have him back but I presume that he'll want a two-way NHL SPC so IMO he's out.

Plenty of guys I'd walk away from before Grant. Most of the Stockton RFA's in fact.

There is no reason for Grant to be out.

Labelling him as a generic tweener is a poor analysis. He's got three things that automatically separate himself from a generic tweener - being 6'3", the best faceoff man on this team and a very good skater. And statistically Grant had 0.75 Goals per game and 1.25 ppg in a very tough-to-score AHL division. It may not translate 1:1 to the NHL but he's done enough to not only deserve an NHL contract but make this team out of training camp. There's a reason only Grant and Hathaway got actual call ups post-deadline.

Guess it's a good thing for Stockton we just signed a former first round pick out of the NCAA that has exactly those qualities. I think it's highly improbable that he makes the Flames and we need spots on the Heat for the younger developmental talent.

Regarding Jooris - I suspect he gets the Byron treatment and doesn't get qualified but the Flames try to bring him back on a cheaper deal.

So annoyed that Stajan has another two years and Smid and Raymond both have another year. That's $10M tied up in assets that can easily be replaced for less than a third that price. Sure Raymond is in the AHL and Smid is spending most of his time on the LTIR, but still, what awful contracts. And I was actually in favor of acquiring Raymond at one point as a Stempniak replacement, boy was I wrong abou tthat.

I think Grant can make the Flames next fall, I'd have him as a favorite. He's ahead of Jooris, Raymond, Agostino, Shore and F. Hamilton for me as a potential player for the bottom two lines.
