Dougie........ Top half in league scoring. Yeah.

Not sure what to think of this post to be honest? We have a team that is 11th in scoring with 2 forwards that have over 45pts. I think a big reason we are in the top half and not the bottom third is due to having 3 Dmen who can help create the offense.
I would love to add Hamonic to the Flames if they could do it without giving up one of the top 3D, Monahan, Gaudreau, Bennett, or this years 1st then I would be all for it. I just think you are one of the only people that would give up the younger Dman who has played better at a young age than Hamonic did.

There is no point in adding a Dman at this point. We can only protect so many at expansion draft time. Brodie, Gio and Hamilton are those guys.

I would suggest putting ricardow on ignore because clearly you've been reading too many of his posts.
Dougie Hamilton 2015-16 Season
Out of the Flames d-men:
2nd in goals (behind Norris caliber player)
2nd in P/60 (behind Norris caliber player)
3rd in assists (behind Norris caliber player and Brodie)
2nd in CF% (behind Nakladal, who gets easy assignments)
1st (by a mile) in scoring chance differential
I'm assuming by "5th best defenseman" you are referring to ricardow's oft repeated stat and appeal to authority that Hamilton was 5th on the team in TOI/game, therefore he's the 5th best dman. If you take out hurt/suspended Wideman and traded Russell, he jumps to 3rd, again behind Brodie and Gio.
Just terrible analysis I'm sorry. He's the third best d-man behind two top 10 leaguewide d-men on a team that got completely ####ed over by their goalies.

There is no need to give away assets to get Hamonic. Our D core is set. You could argue "never have too much of a good thing" but it actually might screw up the cap structure...already lots of $ committed to the blueline.
|
Yeah, I'm fine rolling with our current top 3 Dmen and filling out the other 3 with cheaper options. Especially considering I'm one of those that thinks we have some really decent D prospects coming up through the system right now.

Duchene for Harmonic? Would help the Avs get another defenseman they desperately need. And Hamonic goes to a western team. Not sure If that's what the Isles want in return though.

Crazy to think after drafting MacKinnon it seemed like the Avs were set up the middle for the future: MacKinnon-Duchene-O'Reilly. Now they could be down to just MacKinnon after this season if they trade Duchene.

The Avs aren't moving Duchene. This is classic speculation following controversial comments by a coach at a player. He is a cornerstone of their franchise, is a 60 point player on a pretty "meh" team and seems like a decent guy. Roy will be gone long before Duchene.

I would consider firing him before shipping out the team's best players as the team has regressed more every season since he took over.

The Avs still had Stastny during Mackinnon's rookie season too.
Stastny
Duchene
O'Reilly
Mackinnon
I doubt they move Duchene though.
To have all those good young centers and fail to build around them and be left with just Mackinnon would be ridiculously bad.

Duchene is just starting to hit his stride as far as I'm concerned. Next few years will be his best.
Not sure how you can trade a guy like that away....

Because he's not (special I mean)... I'd go so far as to say that he's actually below average and if his name wasn't Patrick Roy he likely wouldn't be coaching in the NHL.

I don't think there's anything to the rumour and I agree Roy is likely gone before Duchene unless there's a huge return - something involving Duchene for Drouin and a defenseman maybe?
Having said that, I also don't think Roy was overly critical of Duchene. What NHL coach do you think wouldn't be annoyed by Duchene's celebration scoring late when they were being drubbed 4-0 (4-1) late in the third in a must-win game for them to make the playoffs. I don't think Duchene exudes character. I don't think he has ever played anywhere near his potential and have my doubts that he ever will. He should be a point per game player year in year out.

I don't know why you are referencing Ricardo. Point is, 4 other defenseman received more ice time on the Flames this year. Period. Do I think Hamilton is more valuable than Wideman and Russell? Ofcourse. But when the games mattered, the coaching staff played those guys more. That's not really up for interpretation.
I would suggest your analysis is overly simplistic, focusing on points. And what does Norris caliber defenseman mean? Is Doughty on the Flames? Let's be honest about what we have. Hamilton is still more about potential than performance.

Sport is an incredibly insular business. You used to be a quality player? Well, here's a major position with an NHL franchise. Funny though that there is frequently no correlation between being a decent player and a decent GM/Coach.

so you are saying if we had Doughty and played him the same ice time as Hamilton he would be our 5th best D?

Roy spent a number of years coaching junior hockey so he wasn't just handed the position. I'm not saying he's any good or not just that he went about becoming a NHL coach in the right way.

So I guess the subtext here is that Hartley doesn't know what he is doing because he is not playing Hamilton enough. That is certainly one possibility. I am not sure I totally see it that way. Hamilton still needs to improve before earning the status that some are giving him and that's why the coach has been sheltering him. Ice time is a pretty good measure for relative defenseman performance IMO.
I am not trying to slam Hamilton. He is a good player with great potential. But he has had games where's he's been bad and a lot of games where he hasn't done much. I think I expected him to have an overall better year than he did. Given the Flames record he is not alone in that.

Hamilton scored 11 goals and 41pts playing #5 Dman minutes imagine what he will do with top 4 minutes?
It is pretty clear that Dougie was eased in by the coaching staff and pat the beginning Hartley did not want to mess with his successful top 4 from last year. Dougie has looked really good playing with Brodie.
Anyone wanting to trade him should give their head a shake in my opinion. He turned out to be as advertised with a huge ceiling he can still reach
