2 years, 5M. Don't think he's worth that though. He needs to prove he can do it consistently, something he hasn't yet shown. Would be a mistake to go any higher/longer, IMO.

What?
Here's how many players these Western Conference teams have with more than 40 points:
Hawks - 4 - Kane, Panarin, Toews, Anisimov (would probably be 5 if Hossa hasn't been injured)
Stars - 4 - Benn, Seguin, Spezza, Sharp
Kings - 4 - Kopitar, Carter, Toffoli, Lucic
Just looking at that - if Colborne can put up 40 points a year - he's a 2nd line player on a good NHL team.
Flames have 3 right now - Gaudreau, Monahan, Backlund and then Colborne would be 4. (Bennett would have to finish on a tear to get there).
40 points is pretty darn good.

I was surprised to see Colborne notch his 18th goal the other night. With the amount of hate he gets around here you would think he had only scored 8.
7th on the team in scoring with numbers you can't sneeze at. 3 points behind Backlund with 9 less games played. Ahead of Frolik in all areas but +/-.
He's an appreciating asset and could be a pretty useful player for us. Versatile enough to play the wing or C if needed, 6'5" and silky smooth mits, I for one would like to see him re-upped for a couple more years. He would be someone I would fear losing in an expansion draft...
While we're in this end-of-season limbo – definitely NOT tanking – I would like to see Colborne tried out on the Gaudreau/Monahan line. His work along the boards has improved lately and he has the vision to keep up with the other 2. He could prove to be a decent stop gap RWer while we wait for Treliving to acquire the real deal.

1 year contract means we definitely lose him for nothing next summer (I presume he must be UFA then) or sign him to a Raymond/Stajanesque contract. He would definitely be one of those 3.5M guys that teams regret a year later if he hits UFA (hopefully not for us).
I would like to see 3x2 or 2x2.2, but I think realistically it'll be .2 or .3/ year more. I'd even be comfortabl going 4 years if it kept him around2; as long as his AAV is low, I don't think he will be hard to trade if he isn't part of the plan here (considering his age and size).

I would do 3 X 2.5
Gives us a cheap 3rd line option for a few years. He brings the secondary scoring that Mason Raymond should have, so why not sign him to the same type of contract as him?

He's at peak value at the moment. He could easily go back to being a 10 goal 30 point guy if his sh% goes back to normal. I think BT moves him in a package for a goalie.

I like Colborne and I hope the Flames re-signed for 2 or 3 years contract. Some posters does not like him and I don't get it. They think he should be a top 6 forward or he should play like Milan Lucic or something. Yes he is a tall guy but that doesn't mean he should play physical all the time. I think he is a good two-way forward who can play in any lines. He can play in all 3 forward positions if needed.

He is 26 and is finishing up his 4th season in the NHL. He has taken a fairly long road to get here - 2 years of College and 3 years in the AHL. Most guys at this point are as good as they get so to speak (more or less - I think players continue making improvements in their games yearly, but more 'tweaks' than big jumps like rookies/young players do).
Colborne I think is an exception to the rule. I think with him 'bouncing around' a bit through all those teams (Denver, Providence, Marlies, Leafs, Flames) and his recurring wrist issues has probably even slowed his development a little.
I think having stability with the Flames has really helped him improve. I think they really helped to alter his game from a 'finesse' type into a sort of 'power-forward' type - at least someone who goes to the net and is good along the boards. They have helped him (or, are helping him) to become a much tougher-to-play-against player.
With everything noted above, I don't think it is unreasonable to expect a bit more development out of Colborne in the next couple of seasons. I don't think this has been an aberration of what Colborne is. I don't think it is merely a lucky streak. I think Colborne will continue adding a bit more size and making some further refinements to his game as he matures - I think he is the prototypical 'late bloomer'.
I don't expect he will suddenly turn into a 1st line power-forward winger who pots 30-40 goals a season. Just a really solid support guy who will pot in 20 goals and make it difficult for other teams to line-match, and help wear out opposing players in a playoff series. Simply playing against big players requires more effort, even if they are not throwing their weight around.
I would like to see Colborne get a bit more aggressive, but I really am enjoying this transition into the player he should have been from the start coming out of College.
I don't think the Flames have any interest in not signing him, and I can't see Colborne pricing himself out of the Flames at this stage. Perhaps his next contract might price himself out if he continues to improve, but not this time I am betting.

Not to nitpick but this is his 3rd in the NHL, he had fewer than 20 career games when he joined the Flames

Figuring this structure, and where Colborne fits in, I think it becomes obvious.
$7M-$7M-$5M
$3M-$5M-$3M
$2M-$3M-$2M
$1M-$1M-$1M
$.75M-$.75M
$7M-$5M
$4M-$3M
$2M-$1.5M
.75M
$5M
$1M
Colborne is a $2M a year player. Now they just have to nail him down to term. I'll say 3 years at $2M. If he wants more give him 1 year at $2M to see of he can repeat and earn a position higher up the lineup.

Except it's an oversimplification. These days teams regurarly have guys on ELC's on the top 6, often a couple in the top 9. This season we've had Bennett, next season I'm guessing we'll have Bennett and someone else. That leaves a bit of extra to spread around the roster.

I wonder if his wrist thing can be permanently solved. He certainly has a decent 3rd line toolbox when he employs it right, IMO, and I wonder if his wrist was hampering him earlier.
