Totally agree. We have enough pieces to start being competitive with a proper #1 goaltender. We still have pieces to add (consistent secondary scoring and a rugged Regehr-style D would be my top "wants"). But with a solid #1 GK, the team's confidence will skyrocket. And waiting for Gilles would waste important years of JG/SM/SB etc...
Pinder was saying something similar to your argument last night on Overtime. Totally agree with you both!

You would have to be certified insane to trade him.

and risk losing him if there is an expansion draft - either him of Allen... thats why there is speculation that some of these names would be available

Elliot's contract expires after next season and will be due for a raise with his play. Allen has played well for them this season as well and looks to be their goalie of the future. Depending on what happens in the playoffs, Blues could be looking to go full-time with Allen next year and trade Elliot. He should get them a good return with that cap hit and his play. Blues also have Binnington, Husso and Copley long term in the pipeline.

Same reason the various Flames coaches never benched the boys on the Iggy Country Club.

If Burrows does that you'd better be at the Village Taphouse in North Van and collect three free rounds (they do that when Burrows scores - maybe he's an owner?).

Backlund's burst of speed to pull away from the defenders on his breakaway was just awesome

One of the things I like best about Flames PG video is that successful players almost always seem to give credit to their teammates in the clips ("we" / "they") -- and when they have failed, they take personal responsibility for it ("I"/"me"/"my"). It shows how remarkable the team culture is in Calgary.
Gotta love what Hartley has done with this team that way -- I might disagree with whom he has on the PP or whatever, but his emphasis on TEAM first is huge. If players can't figure out how to play together and cover each others' butts, it's just a bunch of prima donnas playing shinny and not a team. (see "Oilers")

I might hate a lot of his systems but he's certainly coached the right attitude into these guys

That's for next season. If the Blues fancy themselves a contender they are not worried about Asset Management a year away from a potential expansion draft. The best asset management for them is to hold on to their cheap, experienced goaltender.

Came across this Oiler fan synopsis of the game last night:
Quote:
Having been at the game last night this is my synopsis of the game.
First Period:
The Oilers outplay the Flames for the most part and get the better of the scoring chances and pressure but cant score. The Oilers have a crappy powerplay and the Flames score shorthanded. Ortio with some big saves.
Second Period:
The refs decide they're going to call a bunch of penalties and it ruins the flow of the game. Some Oilers get frustrated by the calls going one way and stop hustling and some mistakes start happening. Defence starts to get tired. Flames go up 2-0. More good scoring chances for the Oilers that they can't cash in on.
3rd Period:
Flames go up 3-0 early. More one sided reffing. 4-0 Flames. The game starts getting chippy and the refs still won't call some blatant stuff by the Flames, the Oilers remain snake bit around the goal. In the end a demoralized Oilers team is outplayed by a Flames team that is getting the bounces, getting the calls, and getting the goaltending.
If the refs are calling an even game when it's 1-0 in the 2nd this game ends differently.

You can't make this stuff up.

Clearly a different game than the coach, who said:
"And we were out-shot. We were out-hit. We were out-scored. We were out-faceoffed. We were out-power-played. We were out-penalty-killed."
But I suppose Oilers fans know better than the Oilers coach when it comes to assessing their team's play?

Loved that as well. Looked to me like one of the defenders tried to slash at his feet and missed.

I think there was a pending penalty on that play, as the ref raised his hand immediately before signalling the goal

I saw Hall and Nurse sporting some crazy draft lottery beards. It's the closest thing to the playoffs for them?
