Yeah. It's 99% Toronto, 1% Tampa

The Lightning have the advantage of being able to offer an 8th year and being in a low tax state so they don't have to offer as much money to match what his take-home would be in Toronto but I expect the Leafs will offer a deal which is far too rich for Yzerman.

It's April. It's over for Stamkos in Tampa. He's going to explore being a UFA. The time to sign him was last summer.
The tax advantage only occurs if Tampa actually offers him market value. At last report they offered him 8.5 million. Not even close enough.
The funny thing is, the tax issue never gets brought up against the Habs and they have the worst taxes in the NHL.

But Stamkos really wants to play in Winnipeg.
It's funny how people will tell me it's delusional of Leaf fans to think Stamkos wants to play for his hometown team and then cite Winnipeg as a preferred destination. Who's delusional exactly?

Stamkos was never going to get $12M. This is Ilya Kovalchuk all over again. He'll get less than Kane.

Montreal is one of the most common teams that players put on their NMC/NTC.

Montreal though is considered a major player for Stamkos according to the media. Craig Button went on TSN 2 weeks ago (Y'kow guys, the "Toronto Sports Network") and had Montreal behind only Tampa and Buffalo and mocked the Leafs chances and had them a distance 5th. Basically the same thing the media said a year ago about the chances of Babcock going to Toronto.

I hope the Leafs get Stamkos. $11m for a 60-70 point player sounds good to me. He can be the new Mats Sundin.

Mats Sundin was a career PPG player over an 18 year career.

Yeah, he can thank the ridiculous 92-93 season for that. Not sure why you're bringing that up though. I was talking more about his time with the Leafs when he was the the lone bright spot on a crappy team. That's what I envision for Stamkos if he goes to Toronto, only he's not as good as Sundin was.

Well, 92-93 had inflated stats for everyone. 114 points sounds high today, but it wasn't that great that year. Sundin was ridiculously consistent in his career.
And if you're saying Stamkos would be stuck by himself on a bad team you're saying Rielly, Marner/Nylandser, the top 5 this year will all disappoint or be outright busts. Sundin never had young talent to work with like Stamkos would.
It's very likely 3 blue chippers join the Leafs in October.

maybe stamkos does want to sign in Toronto...what i dont understand is why he would.
That club is a loooong way from being relevant again regardless of Babcock or the gazillion guys in management.

The teams all rumoured to be interested in offering him a deal missed the playoffs this year. If he leaves Tampa, he is not joining a contender. None have the $.
Toronto is at most 2 years from making the playoffs.

A: The Leafs have tons of money (and cap space)
B: Lot's of extra endorsement $$
C: It's home or as close as he'll get to it.

Could Care Less

Lol. How could you even begin to speculate on that. The Leafs have some good prospects and a random mix of older players who couldn't get a deal anywhere else.
As your god Babcock has been quote multiple times, they're going to be bad for a while.

I understand they can pay him...lots of teams can. I also understand its home for him and if that's the determining factor, then sure.
Let's be honest though, that rebuild they have undertaken is a scorched earth type. It will take 5 years to get where they want to go and that's with all sorts of things falling into place as they are hoping, which is unlikely considering the massive holes on that roster at key spots.
If he does go to TO then it was only about money, which is fine and no one should begrudge him. But if he wants even a chance to win, he has to sign elsewhere.
Like Elliot said last night, this scare he is going through might just change everything.

Can Tampa trade his bargaining rights (and ability to sign for 8 years) before July 1?

Kovlachuk effectively signed a 10 year, 95M deal (or 11 year 98M) in the first nullified deal. That was 6 years ago.
