So I posted yesterday in the "April Fools" thread that it was my son in the video that kinda went viral on the Flames twitter/facebook page.
Quick recap: My wife and 6 year old son spent the morning pulling "April fools" jokes on each other.. then my wife told him that Johnny had asked for a trade... uh oh jokes over lol. He was devastated and burst into tears! Totally didn't think he'd take it that hard, lol.
Anyways, he eventually realized that it was a joke and after my wife managed to calm him down she tweeted the video at Johnny. He replied:
https://twitter.com/johngaudreau03/s...26561384751104
It went crazy from there. The video now has over 90k views and was on reddit, etc.
Flames staff contacted us when they found out we were going to be at the game tonight and hooked my son up big time. He got to meet Johnny after the game..chatted and got an autographed picture, and met a bunch of other Flames players/coaches. We also did an interview with Ryan Leslie/Flames TV!
What an unbelievable experience. The past 24 hours have been a whirlwind haha we were not prepared for any of this! I've got one ecstatic kid on my hands tonight who won't stop talking about how awesome Gaudreau is and how much he loves the Flames. As he puts it "THIS IS THE COOLEST THING THATS EVER HAPPENED TO ME!!!"

Man. Nice story but it starts with an April fools prank on your 6 year old?
You should be extra grateful to the flames for sure.

Of note as well is that Ortio's save percentage since his return to the team (February on) is .915. That's basically an average save % (8.92% shooting rate this season as referenced on quanthockey.com).
Many other factors go into such a value but as a calculation on the back of an envelope, this isn't a bad place for Ortio to stand grand scheme of things through the NHL...especially with the high event Flames in front of him.

Sad thing is if this was a Flames player being dishonest with our fans a lot of people would be upset. These guys are supposed to be role models even for young kids. What good is it if people can't believe what they are being told with a straight face. The Edmonton oilers have no shame in the way they have constantly jerked their fans around!

Play of the Game: Ferland's stick lift on Eberle's one-timer. That would probably have been a sure goal tying this one at 1-1 but he did something we've needed at many key points this season and that took away a potential momentum swing. It was all Flames from virtually then on.
- Ortio was great. Earned his shutout as our D did get beat quite a few times. His "adjusted" save percentage since his call up is a .921. His across-the-grain glove save was arguably the best save we've gotten all year.
- The power play that finally scored was a breath of fresh air. Can we get more of that kind of power play instead of guys stand around passing to the point? I could even live with Colborne on PP1 if you're going to make actual plays like that instead of what you guys normally do.
- Backlund. Awesome player. He doesn't miss Frolik at all... I think Bennett misses Frolik more.
- Derek Grant. Underrated Flame of the Game. He's quietly reviving Matt Stajan too. Next year when Bollig isn't on that line, a Grant-Stajan-Hathaway line could be very nice.
Overall, this wasn't the most dominant team win of the year. The way they humiliated Pittsburgh, Florida, Colorado, and Tampa were the four games that take that cake.
This wasn't the "most exciting" team win of the year. Chicago, Dallas, and Boston were.
But this was still a kickass win.

Much better than just overall save percentage is 5v5 for evaluating goalies. With that shutout, since 2/23 Ortio is at .933. .930 and higher is when you're getting 'very good' goaltending.
Since 2/23 Ortio has played 901 minutes of hockey. This season, of the 52 goalies who have played 900 minutes or more, only 11 have managed a 5v5 save percentage of .933 or better.
Yes, it is a small sample size. Yes, you can argue teams are not playing as hard at this point of the year. However, over this time frame, Ortio has the 7th best 5v5 save percentage in the league. Since his call-up Ortio has been giving us not just starter-level numbers, but in-the-Vezina-conversation numbers. Small sample size or no, it is still very promising for the future. I firmly believe that after his shaky start and losing Hartley's confidence for whatever reason, Ortio has played himself into a contract and the right to fight for the starter's job in camp next year.
edit: Jonas Hiller has the worst 5v5 save percentage of any +900 minute goalie in the league. By almost a full percentage point: 51st Michael Hutchinson .903; 52nd Jonas Hiller .895. Karri Ramo is 38th at .919.

The most exciting thing for me:
Johnny tweeting "I'm not going anywhere bud!"

And what was Calgary playing for? Are they in the playoff hunt? They have pride, it meant more to them to crap on the history of our building than it did for our team to send it out on a high note.

Yeah, Ortio's done well. Earlier this season I was thinking his best bet would be to go back to Finland and try to find his game again. I have liked him since he was drafted but he's taken a lot of ups and downs to get to this stage. It just goes to show the patience needed with young goalies.
We still need a #1 goalie for next season though. Maybe he can steal the job at some point but it's too early, as some have said to give him the #1 job.

Agree. He's on the Kipper career path. He's still not in his prime years, but he's shown well so far. Clearly he's in the Flames plans, and he will be in the argument for #1 a year from now!

Sad I missed this one, and Johnny's 30th.
McClellan's post-game was great though..."frickin' embarrassing." That could be the slogan for that dumpster fire franchise.

I've said this before, but it's not so much the small sample size as it is the fact you throw away the awful stuff. If you cherry pick those other goalies good stretches he's not 11th I'm sure.
I'll be happy to see Ortio as back up next year, but this stretch hasn't increased my optimism much. A goalie is the sum of his work, not "we'll ignore this stuff because he wasn't playing well". What makes is think this Ortio is the real one?

I had pretty much given up on Ortio. Like the previous poster I strongly disagree with taking a players best stretch of games and companies that to league averages. Every other goalie has good stretches, so let's compare to those.
That said you can't deny he has looked good since the call up. You need to factor in these are low pressure games but still.
So does he have the mental toughness to be a backup and not play every night? Can he avoid the horrible starts to the season? Those are the questions now.

Disagree. His current stretch is better than any of the available options and it matters cause that's how he is playing right now. He's challenging for the starting gig at camp.

Yes, Ortio is firmly back in the mix for the starting job, but when you look at his body of work you notice a trend with not being ready to start the year. He always gets better as the year goes along, but it takes him quite a few games to get into form. You cannot rely on that to be your starter to begin a year, because as we saw this year, losing a lot of games early on puts you in a hole that it's nearly impossible to get out from.
I like Ortio and I think he still has starter potential, but for now, expecting him to be the backup is probably best, and let him earn the #1 job the way Mrazek did in Detroit. Show consistency over a full season, with only a letdown here and there, and then we'll talk starting goalie.
