Phone accessories are super neat. Is he big into fitness? Buy him a Pebble Watch. I own one, they're rad.

Clearly you have never played a 3DS if you have to ask what it has over an iPod for games. It's infinitely better.

I have never owned a 3DS. However, why would this kid be playing games? Wouldn't he be, like, listening to music or something? Sony Wireless Headphones are $99 at Best Buy. I own a pair, they're sick.

Yes, he'll be listening to music on his iPod while playing his 3DS.
Are you 75 or something?

I was going to bust him on that, too. This guy gives the world's worst advice.

...I guess that makes no sense. The Pebble is also a terrible fitness watch, now that I think of it.
What was I thinking!?
Can I claim April Fools on this?

undercoverbrother, get him a music care package.
Buy him:
- iTunes card
- Sony Wireless Headphones
That way, the kid can buy both games and songs with the card, and rock out on the headphones.
Don't waste your money on a 3DS.

Note: No one ever take gaming advice from this man. There is nothing "rad", "gaming", or "system" about an old iPod Touch.
I don't think you're wrong, necessarily (from UCB's comments it seems like the kid's just not interested in games that much) but you also seem a bit out of touch on the whole thing. Lots of sixteen year old kids play games. Almost all of them.

I just said the word 'rad' in response to this post:

I only suggested the book because of this post:

I'm just responding/suggesting based off leads.
OP has said multiple times that the kid probably doesn't want a 3DS. He's freaking 16!

if he is laid up for awhile, what about a low end tablet or an older iPad? or a kindle or other reader?
a texture magazine subscription is pretty cheap if he already has a tablet which will give lots to read. Netflix might be okay too.

...and? Lots of teenagers play 3DS. Lots of adults play 3DS.
Not saying you're wrong in this circumstance, but that's a pretty broad brushstroke.

Considering that I am at the (higher end) of this demographic, no. In high school, rarely did I ever see anyone playing games on a handheld device, and most of the time, it was on their phones or tablets. Maybe four 3DS's I ever saw in high school. Maybe it's just my part of the city.

Ah, maybe I am just getting older then. There was no such things as smartphones or tablets when I was in high school -- DS' everywhere though. We had a lunchtime Mario Kart DS gathering in the cafeteria that would routinely be 12-15 people.
It wasn't even that long ago haha. Things move fast.

He has an iPad and iPhone and netflix, but I really like your Texture idea.
