Why would we have to wait until the team is winning to evaluate his moves?
1st and two 2nds for D. Hamilton? Amazing
Signing Frolik? Great depth move
A depth centre who couldn't establish a role for himself for a goal scoring winger prospect? Solid
Kris Russell for Jokipakka, Pollack and a 2nd/1st? Has the potential to be one of the best trades in the last decade of Flames moves IMO.
Signing Nakladal for free out of Europe? Great move.
Treliving has been making great moves. The organization is in the best situation in terms of young assets in my entire time of watching the team in the last 20 years.
|
These are all fine (well Frolik is debatable), but a terrible team pushing up against the cap isn't the best scenario I've ever seen.
The team is still terrible and they are really two inherited miracle 4th round picks away from being in an awful situation.
The goal is to have a winning team. Maybe they'll get there but I want to see it before I crown Treliving.

Find guys who will sign for 1 year, trade them if possible and move on. Say what you will, but the Leafs this year showed a much better blueprint than adding vets on 3 year deals to fill a roster.

The team isn't terrible. The goaltending is terrible. The team has boatloads of promise heading forward and a lot of tremendous young players to build around. Not sure why you choose to focus on their spot in the standings as opposed to the core pieces they've accumulated. Calgary is one of the best young teams in the league IMO. Not very far away from being a perennial contender.

Calgary is not Toronto...not to mention they have buried/traded how many bad contracts in recent years

Sad thing is, calling it just terrible is doing a disservice to just how terrible it has been at times. Early on there was a stretch where the SV% was so bad you needed to go back to the 80's to get comparable goaltending SV%.

Well, technically, he already had a PO team. But for me - after the Iginla trade I expected POs in 3-5 years. As for what will get them there (again), it's easy. With average to above average goaltending, the Flames get in. This season would have gone entirely differently if Ramo and Hiller had the same numbers as last year, which were pretty middling.

The worst is when Oilers/Canucks fan friends say things like "see, we told you the Flames goaltending would go back to average this season and they'd miss the playoffs".
If by "go back to average" you mean "go from average to the worst goaltending I have ever seen in professional hockey and possibly even beer league hockey", then yes you are correct.

Old regime contracts.
And there are guys literally retiring because they can't get a contract right now. Its not hard to find bodies to fill a roster.

-Flu had him bed ridden for several days after last game, advisor did all the contract talk
-No apprehension in new management and signing
-Going UFA didn't cross his mind, advisor asked him if it was an option to look around, he said no, always wanted to be a Flame
-Just had first practise in Stockton, be a sponge, take in as much as possible on how to be a pro, getting ready for camp
-Everything is a lot faster (practise) everything bigger, has to get used to it, and get used to it quickly
-Couldn't be happier with four years in College, unbelievable experience
-Nate Leaman was intense coach, "intense", really helped in development, coming from prep school to College. 170 pound kid coming in.
-Think he developed well, getting bigger and stronger, 170 coming in 200+ now.
-Surreal feeling when they won last year, hard to put into words.
-Feels ready for professional hockey, developed a lot, definitely ready for next step
-All about hard work, take what I see here (stockton) and focus what I need to work on in these last eight games, from there take it into the summer and really gear up for 1st NHL training camp
-Flames message; Congratulations, welcome to the organization, now the hard work begins
lmao question about changing his twitter bio removing "Flames prospect"
-Jankowski laughs, chuckles, changed it a FULL YEAR AGO, didn't even think anything of it. People just noticed now, laughed about it. Changed it to just "National Champs" after they won last year.

Janko just finished his interview with Steinberg. He seems very pumped to be signed by the Flames and playing out this year in Stockton. Sounds like he was intending to sign with the Flames all along. Comes across as a thoughtful, well spoken guy.

While I agree that one year deals might be a better way to go, the Leafs have in no way proven anything. They are still terrible and will likely be terrible next year.

Well, no. There are going to be some pretty dramatic differences in personnel from this season to next year, most notably in goal. I know it has been mentioned, but it bears continued repetition: we cannot understate how bad the goaltending was over the course of the season, and how much even average goaltending would have helped the team this year. Even without knowing how this will play out in the off season, I am really confident that whoever is acquired by the Flames over the summer to play goal, he will be better than what we had this year. It was THAT bad.
Moreover, while Jokipakka is on the roster now, he was not for most of the year. A year that also included incredibly slow and disappointing starts for #1 defenseman Mark Giordano, and newly acquired defenseman Dougie Hamilton. How much will improvements from these two plus beginning the season with Jokipakka affect the outcome to start next year?

Will this team make the playoffs? Have to be pretty awesome goalie they sign.
|
The team would have made the playoffs this year with even average goaltending, so no, it will not "have to be [a] pretty awesome goalie they sign." Although I do expect the Flames to acquire a much better goalie—one who will make big enough of a difference that they will compete for a playoff spot.

I am hearing (and agreeing) that Bennett, Monahan, Gaudreau , Gio and Brodie are far exceeding expectations since BT took over.
What is going to push the Flames into a team that easily makes the playoffs?
|
It all hinges on goaltending IMO...every team plays different in front of crap tender and the Flames have shown that big time this year. Probably due to a lot of young guys as well....look behind them and think this is going to suck. Good goaltender and this group could become regular playoff visitors in 2-3 seasons.

I kinda agree, but there are various aspects of their play that needs work. Defensive zone work needs a complete rethink. Special teams need massive work, they need to be middle of the road for us to have any chance at being play off regulars. Finding another 50 point forward is also a must, as is finding a suitable top 4 guy to round out our top 2 pairings. Goaltending helps us become play off contenders, but our general play needs work before we become regular play off attendees.

The cap concerns are overblown. You will never run into trouble paying star players their money. You run into problems when your 5/6/7 D make a combined $11M when they need to make a combined $4M.
Most of the garbage expires after next year. And there's another $5M gone in 2018.
The point is, I trust Treliving to make the right decision, and so should you. His wins far outstrip his losses, unless you're a member of the 'trade Dougie for Hamonic' crowd.

And I'll wait until he builds a consistent winner. Don't think its an outlandish position. (and no I wouldn't trade Hamilton for HAmonic)
