Hodgson probably just wanted to suck up to Milner after he threatened to quit England. Understandable. Could you imagine an English team without the great James Milner? Oh, the horror!
Quote:
Liverpool midfielder James Milner has threatened to quit playing for the England national side due to the frustrations of being a bit part player, according to the Sun.
The 30-year-old - who has made 50 appearances for his country - is said to be fed up, and will hold talks with England manager Roy Hodgson - or whoever is coaching then - on his future before England's FIFA World Cup qualifiers begin.
24 hours later - BAM! Captain!

You know what though, in a thin squad Milner can be handy. I'd define him as a utility player. Good at a multiple positions but not really great at any of them.

basically same as the above except Drinkwater for Clyne, Milner and Dier can both play RB if needed, Dier can play CB if needed as well so there's versatility
I'd give Milner the armband simply for the Boring Milner Twitter account.
He read a couple tweets when he was on FIFA & Chill where he also dispelled the boring label.

nice to see Austria get some much deserved appreciation. Northern Ireland seems crazy high though and of course they already put England in the top 4 ... they never learn.
Haha I hope Northern Ireland thinks they're better than Poland
Poland should be above Czech, Iceland, Slovakia and N.I. without a doubt imo. Probably Austria as well.
I guess the telegraph isn't aware that Poland has lost once (to Germany, who they beat in the same stretch) in the last 17 games. Might be longer too but 17 games is the longest results list I could find. That dates back to June 2014.
not going to argue with you on that one since we're obviously both biased here. Both teams have one world-class player in the lineup and a pretty nice supporting cast. Personally I think the teams from 7 to 19 are pretty close in what they are capable of doing at the Euros.

Yeah that's why I said "probably" and not flat out. Definitely the same tier of team.

Players on the U.S. women's national soccer team say they are being discriminated against because they are paid less than members of the men's team.
Kessler said the women are paid between 28% and 62% less than men, depending on the kind of match.
The complaint lays out some compelling numbers. Men earn as much as $17,625 for an exhibition match against a top opponent, according to the court document, and get no less than $5,000 even if the team loses.
Its a shame but once Woman's soccer can generate the same TV ratings and ad revenue as Men's soccer, then they could bring up the discussion on being paid top dollar.

Yeah, I dont see that as a form of discrimination, its just a reality. Fewer people are interested in Women's soccer ergo they cant charge as much for tickets or TV rights and as such theres less to go around.

I definitely agree that is should be about fair compensation rather than equal pay but the article states that the ladies pulled in $16M while the men operated at a loss.

America has to be one of the few countries where the women's team is more popular than the mens. Japan maybe too? Canada I guess? But otherwise I can't think of many.
