The only thing I can think of is that Treliving gave ground on the bonus question in exchange for not burning the first year. It's the only thing that makes sense since Jankowski had the leverage to insist on burning the year.

If true looks like another solid job by BT. Thought for sure he'd have to burn a year to get it done.

His teammate Tanev managed to burn a year

Stephen Whyno @SWhyno
#NHLJets sign college free agent forward Brandon Tanev of Providence to 2-way deal for rest of season.

edit: He will even be an RFA after this season.

Ken Wiebe @WiebeSunSports
Tanev deal is worth a prorated $925,000, as per #NHLJets and forward will be an RFA at the end of this season. 35 G, 77 P in 149 GP

I think we can also add Vesey to the list of comaparables, for different - and fun - reasons.

Would be awesome if Jankowski turns into a better player.

If it's reported by McKenzie it's basically confirmed. This isn't some Aaron Ward speculation here.

Not if Jankoski is at the Eichel /Gaudreau/ Wheeler level... but a guy like Jooris and Kesler had the skill but took an AHL year to adapt to the grind of the pro game.

Eichel and Gaudreau had extra games playing for their country in the WJC and world championships.

Other than Flames prospect scrimmages I don't know that Jankowski has skated outside the Eastern time zone. Playing in the Boston area over 30 out of his 40 games were an hour drive from home. ie not Denver or UND or even Michigan.

He has not had the travel league experience of the USHL or Canadian Junior hockey as most NCAA players have had.

Has he ever been on a bus for a 6 hour travel day?

Being able to go on a bus ride is a metric that the advanced stats guys need to get on right away.

Are you fricking serious?

1) yes, yes he has

2) who fricking cares? He isn't made of sugar and he won't wilt sitting on a bus. Just like all the other 20-25 year olds he'll be sitting on the bus with, he'll be fine.

What fricking point are you trying to make here?

Perhaps Treliving has an inkling that there will be an expansion draft in the Summer of 2018 and suggested to Jankowski that it would be to both of their benefits to keep him exempt from this. No player wants to join an expansion team.

If he burned a year of entry level this year, does that mean he would be a UFA a year earlier too? Otherwise, over a 10 year career, this one year is not going to really matter in the scheme of things.

I see Jankowski as a less physical, more defensively aware Blake Wheeler. Jankowski may ultimately be more consistent, but not quite have the same offensive ceiling. This will be especially true if Jankowski continues to fill out his frame. About the only thing I'd want from Jankowski that he can't provide is a right handed shot.

Blake Wheeler's NCAA stats at 21:

44GP 15G 20A 35PTS 72PIM

Mark Jankowski at 21:

38GP 15G 25A 40PTS 28PIM +24

Not sure Jankowski steps right onto an NHL roster like Wheeler did, but wouldn't be surprised if he did, either.

What a first class guy. I have no doubt that if he really wanted to play hard ball he could have burned a year and still gotten his bonuses but he chose to let the team decide what's best for his development. How can you doubt this kid? Six more years and he will be the best player from the 2012 draft

Regardless of his NHL role, I really think Treliving wants him to be able to win a ton of faceoffs at that AHL level and be around that 210-220 lb mark. A 220 lb 6'4" center who can win faceoffs, that's something that would sure help against our mortal enemy Ryan Getzlaf.

I was excited about seeing what Janko could do, but after finding out about his lack of travel time on a bus I guess I can throw that optimism out the window. What a shame.

Just some back of the napkin math:

Burn a year... Gets $92,500 signing bonus today, plus about $50,000 for the rest of the season. Gets another $92,500 on July 1. Will get paid $70,000 in the AHL and $832,500 (plus bonuses) in the NHL next season. Will become an RFA (with no arbitration or offer sheet rights) on July 1, 2017 for a qualifying offer of $874,125 in the NHL and $70,000 in the AHL -- which is most-likely what his second contract will be.

Don't burn a year, ask for maximum bonuses on the second year of the ELC (2017-18)... Gets $92,500 signing bonus on July 1. Will get paid $70,000 in the AHL and $832,500 (plus bonuses) in the NHL next season. Another $92,500 signing bonus on July 1, 2017. Will get paid $70,000 in the AHL and $832,500 (plus bonuses) in the NHL in 2017-18. Will become an RFA (with full arbitration and offer sheet rights) on July 1, 2018.

Most people expect him to need at least some time in the AHL, probably the full season, so the NHL money for next season isn't much of an issue.

If he expects 2017-18 to be his breakout year, it would make sense to want to have the options to have bonuses available for that season, which he wouldn't have if he burns this year.

So, let's say he plays most of next season in the AHL, gets called up late in the season and plays 20 games in the NHL next season (spending about 25% of the season in Calgary). For 2017-18, he makes the Flames out of camp and stays in the NHL all season (and hits one of the bonus milestones, such as top-3 team forward for +/-)...

Burn a year:
  • 2015-16: $92,500 signing bonus + $50,000 NHL salary for remainder of season
  • 2016-17: $92,500 signing bonus + $52,500 (75% of AHL salary) + $208,125 (25% of NHL salary)
  • 2017-18: $874,125 NHL salary (not on ELC, so no bonuses)
TOTAL: $1,369,750

Don't burn a year:
  • 2015-16: AHL PTO (I think they get a per diem, but no salary)
  • 2016-17: $92,500 signing bonus + $52,500 (75% of AHL salary) + $208,125 (25% of NHL salary)
  • 2017-18: $92,500 signing bonus + $832,500 (NHL salary) + $212,500 (one "A" level performance bonus)
TOTAL: $1,490,625
TOTAL WITHOUT BONUS: $1,278,125

So, he'd make more guaranteed money by burning a year, but can potentially make more if he gets full bonuses in the second year and hits at least one of them.

I can't wait for things like that to come up in negotiations:

Sure he hasn't put up points, takes a lot of penalties and doesn't have team chemistry but he can sit on a bus for hours!

I just wish we could see him play soon.
