So I guess Gilmour didn't get signed?

Smart move by both the Flames and Jankowski to wait until next year.

He still may. Lots of time for that. Hell, he may already be signed and the team is sitting on it so they can introduce both players at the same time.

No reason to assume that at all. Gilmour is a pretty low profile player, I doubt many if any media are contacting his agent to ask how the talks are going.

Well maybe that was so obvious to everyone else it didn't need to be said haha.

I was thinking a 3 year and we burn one off the whole time.

At the very least, I hope Mark Jankowski carves out a career along the lines of Brian Skrudland.

I don't get why Janko wouldn't insist on burning the first year. From a pure financial standpoint he has all the leverage and it gets him onto his RFA deal sooner.

And playing 5 games this year in the AHL vs playing 2 NHL games won't really affect his development one way or another. He must have the friendliest agent out there.

2 years of financial security versus just 1.

Yeah I'm surprised we didn't have to burn the year.

Maybe? Unless the bed gets crapped by a long term career ending injury Jankowski would have gotten a qualifying offer regardless next summer.

Two weeks of an NHL paycheque now is hard to pass up.

It gives him more time to show he is an NHL player. If he plays in the AHL all next year and breaks into the NHL the year after, he might be able to get a larger second contract. If he burns the first year now, and spends the full next year in the AHL like most are expecting, the second contract wouldn't be much different than his ELC.

I think this shows a real level of maturity. This shows that Jankowski is thinking long-term and because he is negotiating bonus clauses it means he believes he can end up being an impact player in the NHL. If he didn't believe that he would just take the standard contract, take the money and run.

My guess is that Jankowski will get a slightly more bonus-heavy deal than he would've otherwise in exchange for not burning the first year of his ELC right away. Not a terrible gamble by Treliving.

I haven't seen this guy play aside from some youtube clips. Is his upside in the sami pahlsson territory? Great third liner on a contender?

That was my thought as well.

If this shakes out as reported by Mackenzie, that is another, in a long line of solid contract signings for Treliving. I know some people don't like his first few (Engelland, Raymond etc) but as discussed many times, there was a reason for those. Regardless, since then, it has been nothing but solid negotiating.

He is hard nosed and persistent. Just what you want in a negotiator.

As for Jankowski, I agree with the assessment that this shows a level of maturity and long-term thinking. The kid seems to have a head on his shoulders.

Not to raise the Feaster debate again, but he and Weisbrod focused on character during their tenure, and they sure came up with a lot of character kids.
