Default Dodgeball events around calgary

Is apparently a dodgeball event going on this weekend and was wondering what the denizens of CP thought about it.

Big Bump

I've been playing Dodgeball for the last four years in the CSSC leagues and a couple times in the Calgary Dodgeball League. There's multiple leagues in Calgary now and I'm surprised there's no thread, unless I completely missed it.

If you're going to become true dodgeballers, then you've got to learn the five d's of dodgeball: dodge, duck, dip, dive and dodge!

I used to play for a number of seasons, pretty fun stuff.

Though I do recall some guy not being able to catch one ball being thrown his way in a game - REALLY got a finger jammed and kinda stumbled to the sideline. He looked a bit shocked so I walked over after the round was done . . . asked if he was okay, his face was pretty pale and I glanced down to see a bone sticking out of his hand/finger.

They took him to the hospital rather quickly after that.

That's nasty, I've only seen one broken finger, sadly I've torn my ACL(they call it a kamikaze for a reason) and I have few mangled fingers.

The funny thing is catching is the most important skill

I play in the winters with CSSC. I find there are some pretty aggro people out there. Especially in the crappy rec league I play in. Sometimes it takes the fun out of it.

And a terrible one at that. It worked way too hard to promote the machismo of the sport. They focused too much on how much people get hurt for some reason, and how "cool" it is to throw at people's heads. Then again, they also use those wussy foam dodgeballs rather than proper rubber balls.

Though the highlight around 2:30 of the girl getting smoked in the face and losing her tooth is from Calgary - Renegade dodgeball league.

I play CSSC/CDL as well. Luckily, no major injuries for me. Did see a guy break his tibula/fibula in CSSC's last tournament though. Ugly injury.

The residence I lived in during University had a dodgeball league.

Way better than anything I have played in Calgary.

I find for the most part everyone plays in recreational, so it's hard for them split the teams up. Most of the better teams are starting to play in the other leagues, so I'd still recommend CSSC for new players. Dodgeball in general suffers from aggressive players and cheating. The leagues still haven't learned how to handle it. You just hope you have a good "GC"

Unfortunately for the CSSC (and ESSC up north), a little too much hubris got in the way and really fractured the community.

CSSC used to be really rec for the newbs, recreational, intermediate, competitive.

But most of the old competitive people are now in Renegade, and the intermediates (plus a few competitive jackholes) are in CDL, both of which are splits from CSSC.

That really just leaves CSSC as the rec league, which has been a mixed bag over the past few years. The teams I play on are some of the oldest still playing, and are noted for our sportsmanship - which is something we are all proud of - but the overall quality can vary from season to season. Some good and fun teams, some bad and not fun teams, and a bunch in the middle.

I generally have one rule when it comes to the not-fun players: If I see you cheating, I'm coming at you with a fastball. And I've got a good throw when I need one.

Also of note, CSSC is currently toying with the idea of 35+ leagues for a few sports, including dodgeball. They are currently gauging interest on the idea.

I saw that and may consider it. This season at CSSC my team is the only experienced team, so it's been weird, we've had to be patient with a lot of the rules being broken but it's been nice for most part.

When played in CDL, it wasn't fun, some teams were stacked and others were just miserable to play with, I couldn't figure out if they actually enjoyed playing or not.
