Having said that I don't think Treliving really minds if he walks and is going to be a hard negotiator. If Jankowski doesn't want to play ball he will have no problem letting him walk.

Again that's my opinion on baseless speculation.

And if Treliving made this a priority they wouldn't still be negotiating about bonuses. He's made him a priority IF Jankowski wants to sign under his terms.
The fact that they still are negotiating means that Treliving considers this a priority. He wants to get this done. He dispatched a negotiating team to meet with the player at the earliest possible moment. Seems like that is a priority move to me, and that isn't baseless speculation, that's based on the actions of the hockey club.

I thought it was amusing, the way peopel take something like that and just run with it. I will admit though I took it alot more seriously with you saying that than someone else.

You should have just let the forum sweat it out for another day or so Freeway before clarifying!

This,

If we sign him, we get a few more years to develop a potentially 3rd /4th liner. If we lose him, we get a second round pick who could be Joe Nieuwendyk or some bum who never plays.

Personally, I like the upside of a second round gamble.

If Jankowski was to develop into more than a frignge NHLer, I think we'd have seen more by now.

Wow some people are really selling Jankowski short. Has there been a more polarizing pick? Having seen him at some of the prospect camps I think he's going to be an awesome addition. Big, 21 years old, 2-way, play making center. I'd rather roll the dice on that than over the 50th overall pick.

NO.

This is just simply not correct.

There are on the contrary plenty of very viable reasons to be relatively certain that Treliving wants Jankowski under contract, and that he has made this negotiation a top priority. The fact that the Flames made a contract offer to Jankowski in person and immediately on the heels of his college season is actually a very good basis to believe his intentions. The fact that the Flames and Jankowski are actively negotiating is actually a very good basis to believe his intentions. All you have to assert your opinion is gut and innuendo, which really amounts to nothing.

There is a world of difference between being a tough negotiator and getting what you want, and low-balling out of pretence. Don't confuse the former for the latter.

Bull. Contrary to popular belief, Treliving is not a wizard who can will things into existence. Of course he has made it a priority to have Jankowski under contract in accordance with his terms—to enter a negotiation from another starting point would be rather stupid.

It most certainly is.

I guess we will find out soon enough. My opinion all along has been that Jankowski will feel slighted by the offer and refuse it and become a UFA. We will see who's "baseless speculation" and gut feeling was right.

Except that my and other's speculation on this matter is definitively not "baseless."

This is how I see it now that bonus money has been shown to be important in our cap situation.

Jankowski wants to burn a year and get some NHL games this season. He'd also want maximum bonuses.

Treliving wants him to report to Stockton with limited bonus money.

Maybe Jankowski gets to burn a year with limited bonuses. Anyways there are points to this negotiation that aren't just here's your contract, sign or not.

That isn't a 7th round pick. Last year the Flames got Andersson at 53 and Kylington at 60.

Having watched him play a number of times, both in person and on TV, I'll agree to disagree with your assessment.

The kid is a much better player than many are giving him credit for and is built for the NHL. Don't let his numbers mislead you into thinking otherwise.

News Update

Flames inch closer to signing Jankowski
http://www.calgarysun.com/2016/03/30...mark-jankowski

Quote:
It appears Mark Jankowski’s four-year wait to turn pro is almost over.

And that’s good news for Flames fans who will likely learn as early as Wednesday the former first-round draft pick from Providence College isn’t bolting for free agency and will sign in Calgary.

“We’ve made progress today,” Jankowski’s advisor/agent Wade Arnott said Tuesday night, following a long day of philosophical and accounting discussions with the Calgary Flames.

“I know everyone wants to cut to the chase and find out if he’s signing or not. In his case, there are a lot of factors to discuss.”

Arnott insisted the old adage “no news is bad news” is not applicable to Jankowski’s silent contract discussions.

“These things don’t happen overnight,” said Arnott, reminding people Johnny Gaudreau’s hasty decision to punctuate his junior year at Boston College with a signature and a jet to Calgary is a rarity.

“A lot of the other cases are more cut and dried.”
Quote:
The Flames own his rights until Aug. 15 and would like to sign him, but Jankowski’s camp and the Flames still aren’t quite on the same page in terms of bonuses and the development path the 21-year-old would take from here.

Flames GM Brad Treliving said late last Tuesday night he is indeed still optimistic a deal will get done.

Treliving has been very public about the fact the late-blooming centre will need at least a year in the American Hockey League, which is where he’d like him to start as early as this week.

Jankowski’s camp feels he has the leverage for bonuses most 21st picks don’t get and would like to suit up as a Flame this spring so he can burn a year off his two-year entry contract and get to free agency faster.
Quote:
“Calgary hasn’t done anything to dissuade Mark from being a Calgary Flame,” said Arnott, reiterating how great the Flames have been with Jankowski all along.

“This new regime, which did not draft him, did a great job supporting and developing him. They haven’t given him any reason to not be a Flame.”

More baseless speculation, but I wonder if the Baertschi drama is weighing on Jankowski's insistence on playing hardball - his seeing another 1st round pick get only fleeting glimpses at the NHL for years because he "wasn't ready" (even for different reasons), yet is a full time NHLer in another organization.

Yeah, Jankowski really has most of the cards in the negotiation, because he holds the nuclear option of just walking away. On the other hand, the Flames don't want to just bend over for a prospect with so many questionmarks. Easy to see why the negotiations aren't fast.

I don't really see how Baertschi would be a factor. We have current 1st rounders who have never played a minute in the AHL and current 1st rounders that have only gotten fleeting glimpses in the NHL. I think most prospects don't have their feelings hurt by playing in the AHL.
