Offer $1M per year plus the promise that everyone on CP will start spelling his name right. See if he jumps at that.

I would like to see him replaced with one of our prospects with more upside with regards to skating ability, IQ and consistent physicality.

The biggest difference in terms of stats used in arbitration AFAIK would be
- Bouma was +10
- Bouma was 7th in the NHL in hits at 264
whereas
-Colborne is -9
-Colborne is 134th in the NHL in hits, currently at 119

haha it would be so amazing if the Flames used RGI to try and lower his value during arbitration. I would forgive almost all of ricardodw's posts on the forum if it were successful.

Based on the Bouma contract Colborne has played himself out of Calgary. Like many on this board I wouldnt pay him over 2m per year. But he's probably going to get closer to 3 so that makes him too expensive imo

Our biggest problem offensively is secondary scoring, so what is the solution when a secondary scorer emerges; trade him!

Here's a question -if you wanted to flip him, would you take a flyer on Yakupov straight up if that trade could happen?

Hopefully, it will be a 1 year contract at $2M or less. Emphasis on the 1 year. I think this one will go to arbitration. If someone decides to give him an offer sheet for more than $2M(It is $1.826 for a 2nd this season), take the 2nd round pick and run.
If the Flames decide to sign him to a 2-3 year contract for $4.5M-$5M(total) the risk outweighs the reward in my eyes.

I can't see Edmonton trading away Yakupov to Calgary. Too big of a chance that blows up in their faces.
When people say trade him, do they mean sign and trade or just trade his negotiation rights? How much value is there in trading an RFA without a contract?

I think what he brings is replaceable on with an ELC or a cheaper FA. I'd say trade him.

This logically makes no sense. He's been trending up ever since we acquired him and this will likely continue.
Colborne is big, skilled and starting to use his recently filled in frame. This is the exact type of player you keep as a solid 3rd line option. He is the type of player who can also fill in on the top-2 lines if necessary.
Also a shootout specialist which is just a bonus.
I'd be happy to offer him 2-2.5 mil for 2-3 years.

@DJones
What if we traded them Baertschi and Hanowski?

Colborne is racking up the points in meaningless games and will probably demand a $2.5 mill/yr contract. I bet another team would overpay in a trade to get a 6'5" forward that has increasing offensive numbers. Wonder if the Ducks would be interested in Colborne+ for Andersen swap. Both are 26 and upcoming RFAs looking for significant raises.

And Colborne would counter with:
1) Points are worth more than hits.
2) Colborne had more points in his contract year:
17, 18, 35 in 67 games (and still counting)
16, 18, 34 in 78 games
3) Colborne has more career games, more points, and a higher PPG:
36, 61, 97 in 227 games .427 PPG
22, 31, 53 in 199 games .266 PPG
Pretty easy case that he should get more, not less

What will Colborne's new contract be?

Only if you think players continue to trend upwards on a permanent basis. What I said makes perfect sense based only on logic and trends alone.
At 26 he is in his peak years, with the average NHL forward performing within 90% production of their peak between 24 and 32.
Whatever you think he deserved this past year for his play is what you should pay him for the next three.
He would be an anomaly if he kept getting better, so I think it would be a huge mistake to provide a contract betting on that.

I know people like to use age to determine so called peak years but it makes more sense to me that it's years of NHL service that matter. I would argue that a player should improve in some aspects for about 5 years after joining the league as they learn little things to help them improve their numbers. Their skill levels may not improve further, but things like their positioning, physical play and other things you learn by playing at that level will still develop.

Tough crowd. On Canucks forums they are excited that both Horvat and Baertschi may eclipse 30 points this season while Flames fans want to ship out Colborne for getting close to 40 points like these types of players on entry level deals grow on trees.

Colborne is the perfect 3rd liner that can step in, in the event of an injury.
Seems like if you aren't a 30 goal scorer, people on here want you traded.
