And because he was a 3rd round pick, I don't think they even get compensation.

Spit balling here, but would the NHL be able to give scholarships to NCAA players if they sign within 3 years with their drafting club? Say the scholarship wouldn't be effective until after they forfeit their eligibility?

NCAA would probably see that scholarship as promise of payment from the leagues and tell any players that accepted the scholarship or the promise of the scholarship they would lose their eligibility.

How would this be different from a business paying for an MBA or something?

I kind of misunderstood what he wrote.
It still wouldn't fly. You are basically creating a two tier ELC system. One for NCAA players where the NHL would give extra benefits to college players only. The other tier for junior, euro, etc.
Unless the NHL is willing to offer scholarships to every draft pick that signs a contract with a NHL team.
Do these players even need scholarships? Most teams are giving $50k to 92.5k in signing bonuses when a player signs.
The main problem is that the NCAA still foolishly tries to hold on to amateur status.

Yeah, I'm tired of these pieces of crap walking away from the teams that drafted them. Hard to believe this hasn't been fixed in the CBA yet.

The 2 tiered system is an issue, however my reasoning for the scholarship was more than just the money. It's more about putting a bit of pressure on the NCAA to be more accommodating. I guess if the NHL wanted to, they could also push the UFA eligibility back by a year. Either sign with your drafting team, give them notice that you won't sign so your rights can be traded, or sit for a year and then go UFA.

The signing bonuses could be "scholarships" just like their agents are "advisors".

For me, the problem is that a player can pass on his team and become a UFA with absolutely no cost or consequence. If they had to wait a year, or go back in the draft, that would at least have consequences and be a deterrent. But as it stands, why wouldn't a player wait until August?
It's really a stupid rule.

Wow, really?
As I wrote on the Baertschi saga, it amazes me how anti-players many fans are... No one bats an eye where a player who has chosen to sign with team X, has moved his family there, bought a house, put down roots, etc., can wake up one day and be told he's been traded to a completely different team he never agreed to play for, yet when a player exercises his rights to control his career, he's a piece of crap.

Poile said he talked with Vesey’s dad (Leafs scout) Jim Thursday and he was in favor of his son signing in Nashville.

The NCAA really has no incentive to be more accommodating to the NHL.
Also, they're not going to do anything that could potentially set a precedent for football or basketball, which is where their real money is.
The answer is simple, if teams are worried about this, they don't need to draft college-bound kids. If the NCAA starts seeing too many kids choosing to go the junior route rather than going to college, then the NCAA will have incentive to change their rules.
