Would LOVE for Vesey to come play in CGY. His play at the WJC during Gaudreaus time stuck in my head and he's done nothing but get better. He's going to find a good fit on any team he chooses to play for.

wow, that sucks for the Preds. Not completely out of the blue (IIRC they already tried to sign him last year), but still ... ouch.

I think Bruins would be favorites followed by Toronto.

At any rate. Vesey's bloomed into a stud prospect. Really like the way he plays.

Really dislike how teams can spend years developing a player in NCAA just to loose them to UFA. Can't imagine if the Flames had lost Gaudreau to this stupid rule.

Yeah I really don't like it either. They should extend the time teams hold draft rights by one year so these collage players would have to go play in Europe or something if they really didn't want to sign with the teams that drafted them.

Teams have no control of the development of a player in the NCAA.

Let's see if Nash will trade his rights for Jankowski's.

yeah, on the one hand it really pisses me off when players pull stuff like that. On the other hand ... dozens of drafted players aren't offered contracts by their NHL teams and nobody bats an eye.

In my opinion, this isn't a loophole, and it didn't need to be addressed. However, too many highly-rated prospects are choosing UFA status now, and I think it is starting to be a problem.

Maybe the answer is that the "Russian Factor" will start being applied as the "NCAA Factor", and teams will discourage their drafted prospects from choosing the NCAA route.

I don't think it really needs to be addressed yet, but I do think the numbers are indeed up with the number of players that are choosing this avenue. It seems more high-profile players are in the last couple of years anyways. I thought it was more a 'blip' than a 'thing' - now I am not so sure.

are they? I actually can't think of many in recent history.

Corban Knight
Kevin Hayes
Zach Hyman
Jimmy Vesey

that's the only examples I could think off the top of my head, and that doesn't seem like a long list ...

EDIT: then of course there's the Schultz loophole, but apart from Mike Reilly, who has used that one in recent history?

They should at least have to re-enter the draft like jr players

They should tighten up that rule.

Jake Muzzin wasn`t offered a contract by his NHL team. Nobody batted an eye because he was still an NHL talent and ended up getting a contract by the Kings and eventually made the NHL. No one lost.

If a player who isn't an NHL talent doesn't get offered a contract by his NHL team, the NHL team isn't screwing him over, his own talent is.

What do the Preds get out of this? Nada. For a player who is probably an NHL talent.

It'd be nice if there were a rule where Vesey can sign his UFA contract in August 2017 instead of August 2016. I wonder if he would change his mind.

Not control, but NCAA players still attend development camps. Also I am sure there is a ton of information they provide to player related to nutrition and training, plus the time waiting for the player to develop to the point of being NHL ready. While receiving a compensation pick for losing the player is nice, it basically sets the team back 4 years in development of a prospect.

Yeah that hurts if you're a Preds fan

But then again I think of any other business and sometimes you have head hunters, businesses trying to hurt their competitors, and employees trying to take short cuts up the corporate ladder. Every business has deal with these challenges, and the NHL already gets so many advantages over other entertainment businesses. They get free arenas, they control the N.A labour market, they have full control over players until they're 27 years old, and they have restrictions on salary

Hard to feel bad for them.

Blake Wheeler as well IIRC. I am sure there have been more. However, my point is that it sure seems like an increasingly more common thing than it was before (though I haven't checked the numbers), and it seems to be an easier decision to make.

Yeah, I think so too, but I am not sure how that would be done fairly. 4 years is a long time post-draft. I think the best way to close it would be to have the NCAA allow players to sign a contract and remain eligible. I can't see the NCAA allowing it... but if NHL teams suddenly start to discourage their prospects from going the NCAA route, maybe that would make the NCAA start thinking?

I don't know... Must be a better way to make it fair for both the prospects and the respective drafting teams.
