HL2 is not yet out, but you can download it via steam (and buy it) in different packages, which lets you playes Counterstrike source (source being the new engine the powers HL2) as soon as HL2 goes retail you're DL'd copy on your hardrive will be unlocked.
It's kinda neat. As well you can get Half life 1 source (redone with new engine) and other goodies.
Although you never get a hard copy of the game if you do it that way, but you can just back up the files etc..
