Remind him that it's not in his best interests to go Schultz himself....

So tell him don't sign in Edmonton.

Agreed, Jankowski needs to earn the spot. However I would think the issue is the player wants a chance to play with the Flames this season if he is signed....
Bigger story from this saga, is if the player does not sign.....
It won't look good on the Flames....

In terms of people I want to protect? Absolutely. I'd also give the 7th spot to Kylington if we can/will likely have to.

It doesn't look good on the flames if they were not willing to let him play a couple games this season. If they are, and he wants guarantee for NHL spot next year i can't blame the flames.

AHL should be the expectation for next season.
And if he doesn't sign, those who want to blame this on Treliving are completely out to lunch. Jankowski wasn't even close to being ready for professional hockey last year.
|
Disagree. It's on Treliving and no one else. When he chose to send him back to college, he knew this was the situation he was creating.
As for Jankowski not being 'even close' to being ready for the AHL last year, I would say he was more ready than Kylington was (and I was FOR Kylington going) and more ready than Klimchuk.

I will also say this - if I was agent - I'd tell him not to sign unless the Flames are willing to burn the year. I'd tell the Flames - we will give you the same shot we give every once when his free agency hits but if you aren't going to burn the year we have zero incentive to sign this contract without hearing from every other team.

It wasn't a big deal in the slightest when they gave Arnold a game. Arnold was no more ready than Jankowski is. And it rustled exactly no one's feathers.
Give him a game if that's what it takes. Who cares?

Has it been confirmed that Janko wanted to sign last summer? I think he thought about it, but I thought i read that he decided he wanted one more year ( along with the flames) in college. Could be wrong.

Disagree.
Jankowski would have struggled significantly in the AHL this season. He was not ready. Apparently the Flames agreed.
The only way Jankowski becomes an NHLer is if he goes back to college. Playing 40 games for the Heat and putting up 5 points doesn't help him at all.
If another team benefits from that, fine. At least we get a 2nd rounder in compensation. That's better than what I believe would have happened had he signed last year.

Seems far fetched that the agent is asking for a guarantee to have Janko in the NHL next season......

Based on what?
Did it hurt Klimchuk or Kylington?

Kylington was already playing in a better league than Jankowski against professionals.
Klimchuk's alternative was the ECHL or NHL. We know the NHL wasn't an option, and the ECHL is a graveyard for most prospects.
Sometimes prospects sink, sometimes they swim. If you can defer that with Jankowski and give him a greater chance to swim by sending him back to college for that 4th season, I take it every time. It's yet to be seen whether he sinks or swims, but given how many young players struggled on the Heat this season, I wouldn't have liked his chances.

Klimchuk's option still included an overage year in the WHL.
Jankowski would have been fine in the AHL, struggled yeah but that's part of it.

My bad, that is correct.
In retrospect, he probably should have been sent back for his overage season. It's rare to see among 1st rounders, but would have been better for him than what happened this season.
hence my stance with Jankowski.

I don't pretend to know exactly how the current Flames management values Jankowski. However, I do feel strongly that if they draw a line in the sand on playing a couple of games this year and burning a year off his ELC and don't budge it gives us a pretty good idea. If that is the hill they choose to die on then we know that there evaluation of the player is only slightly more than a second round pick in this draft.
Maybe they feel that the extra second, which would give us 4 in total (likely Dallas isn't a top 4 team) has as much value as Jankowksi. You could certainly make some moves with 2 firsts and three seconds or one first and 4 seconds.

Each have their pros and cons. And at the end of the day, no one can know which is better (and history doesn't seem to lean one way or the other).
That's why, for me, it comes down to the asset management and risk management.
If he signs, no harm no foul. But if he doesn't...

2017 2nd round pick.
Jankowski can't be a UFA until August 15th this summer, well past the 2016 draft.
