There probably will be better players than Raymond signing PTO's, or under $1 million year deals. I can't see any team, no matter how bad they have to get to the floor, being interested in Raymond at $1.575 million.

Raymond is either going to be bought out, or back in the minors next year.

Team improves as Gaudreau, Monahan, Bennett, Hamilton, Brodie, Ferland, new draft pick maybe improve and hopefully better goaltending occurs.

But, to your point, there is no room to add a piece to improve beyond the above, but doing things like buying out people that do force us to spread out cap hit just so we can make a move next year isn't worth it. Next year likely isn't our year (cup wise) anyway. Have to remember the Flames should be planning to be in the best possible position when our young core starts to peak. That's not next year, and rushing to get rid of bad contracts that are going to expire in two years or less is not needed, unless a deal or player we see as being the long term solution we really need becomes available next year and we just can't pass it up.

Raymond will get a chance to make the Flames next year. He'll probably blow it, but he'll get a chance over Poirier, Shinkaruk, etc if they all put in similar performances at camp

The one thing that may make this a VERY, VERY remote possibility (like let's say a 2% chance) is the fact that he's at least an expiring contract now. But even then, I wish I could bet more than a penny on Raymond being traded even at $1.575M, but I can't because he sucks too much now.

This is a point in favour of Treliving's cap management, I must say. The team has bad contracts, but they all expire fairly soon. It's a pleasant change to think that we will have some cap flexibility when we actually need it.

Agreed. I say this a lot, but people tend to forget the circumstances around the bad contracts we have on this club, at least the ones Burke / Treliving brought in.

Bad team starting a rebuild that didn't want to go the Oilers route of just handing rookies who aren't ready spots. Likely have to over pay to attract veterans (or trade for less than desirable contracts) to get players to sign on a team that appeared years away from competing. But despite overpaying (likely because he had too) Treliving kept the terms in the right ballpark sovthatvtge team would be in good shape as our younger players start to make real impacts.

Only real exception I see there is the Stajan deal.

What about Wideman with $750,000 retained for Jaro Halak, who's cap hit is $4,500,000 for two more seasons?

The Isles are going to lose a top 4 RHD this off season when they trade Hamonic, so Wideman might be a fit for the short term.

Greiss has played slightly better than Halak has and is cheaper.

Isles have 24 year old JF Berube ready to assume the back up role, plus Gibson in the minors.

Cap hit would be a wash for the Isles with the Flames retaining $750k on Wideman.

Flames get a stop gap veteran starter for $5,250,000 next year and $4,500,000 the following year, then hopefully Gillies is closer to being ready.

Flames also free up a defensive spot for Nakladal.

Isles get a top 4 offensive RHD for $4,500,000 and save money on goaltending.

Haha. That'd be nice. I was 100% on the Hamonic train, but if the Flames did grab him and the expansion happened, boy would they have some decisions to make with Gio, Brodie, Hamilton and Hamonic to protect.

I'd rather involve Wideman in a trade for Hamonic himself, instead of Halak. I don't think a team can have too many top-4 D, particularly guys who are young and on great deals like Hamonic. We've got Andersson in the system, and Nakladal who's an RHD too, but having a right-side of our defense be Brodie-Hamilton-Hamonic for the next 4 years with Nakladal as an injury call-up and then Andersson developing in the AHL all for the low, low price of 14 million would go a long way to getting this team deep into the playoffs.

Giordano-Brodie
Jokipakka-Hamilton
Wotherspoon-Hamonic

Scratches/first call-ups next year:
Smid-Engelland

And then developing/minors
Kylington - Nakladal
Hickey - Andersson

Edit: Aww crap, I completely forgot about protecting players in the expansion draft. That's gonna suck because I think Kylington might be exposed. I'd hate to lose him to Las Vegas.

Wideman ($750,000 retained)
Poirier or Shinkaruk
Wotherspoon
2016 1st (Stars - if we get it, if not Flames 2nd probably 5-10 spots lower)

Hamonic
Halak

we would just do 8 players (bennett is exempt as well as this years pick)
Monahan
JG
Backlund
Frolik
GIo
Brodie
Hamonic
Hamilton
would all be protected.

Lets say the sabres win the 1st overall and draft matthews and decide to deal reinhart for some defensive help. How would u guys feel about a package around the #4-5 overall pick (if chcyruns on the board) for sam reinhart? Reinhart is a RH shot who can play rw or centre.

Right now Columbus is desperate for a centreman. I really like Josh Anderson, the big-bodied right winger who's faired well in his 16 NHL games. He's a 21yr old 2012 draft pick, so he fits perfectly into the Flames age group.

They already have Bjorkstand, Atkison, Clarkson as long term right wing players. You think we could trade someone for this guy?

he only played one regular season game last year. I read somewhere he would be exempt, doesnt matter if his contract had one year burned last year. Not 100% sure though

If they use the CBA definition of pro season, he is not exempt

I like the idea, but I think the Isles would ask for our 2017-1st in such a move... in addition to everything else that you listed.

Wotherspoon, Poirier and Shinkaruk are all nice prospects but I think they hold minimal value on the trade market. Wotherspoon is soon to be eligible for waivers and has yet to establish himself (not to say he won't). Poirier has, whether anyone else wants to admit it or not, lost some of his luster as a former 1st round pick. Shinkaruk was peddled for a year before the Flames picked him up in a clear dump move.

The 1st/2nd is the most valuable piece but I don't think the Isles need/want another 25-35 OA pick. They want a top 4 guy, which Wideman kind of is but not really.

The looming expansion probably killed any interest the Flames had in Hamonic, unfortunately.

I do think Halak is a good target though, and one I hadn't thought of. A lot will depend on the outcome of the 2016 playoffs methinks.

Even still you could drop Frolik from the protected list and put Bennett on instead.

Either that or you expose Gio and build the D around Hamilton, Brodie and Hamonic.

Anyways, will worry about it if it happens haha.

A lot of eyes now turn torwards Jimmy Vesey and Nashville. Harvard was eliminated, Vesey's college hockey career is over.

David Polie says he avoided adding at the trade deadline so that the Predators would have an open spot for Vesey.
