I was only asking because it's posted that they should buy out Stajan but there is still a penalty against the cap isn't there?

There;s no way Stajan will be bought out regardless, because they'll need him to hit 25% for the expansion draft

Stajan wouldn't be a bad guy for an expansion team to pick up. Gets them to the floor, a decent veteran in the room, can still do stuff like faceoffs, maybe a new lease on life thing.

I dont think he will either but that poster said buy him out but didn't include the buy out penalty in the budget.

My point is that buying someone out still comes at a cost

That's a solid endorsement there.

"Have to pay him"
"Can do stuff"
"Decent guy"
"May have a new lease on life"

Would love to see those intangibles listed when analyzing the expansion draft pickup.

When is the buyout period?

There very well may be no expansion even happening. I believe they will announce any plans before the draft.

The normal buyout window starts June 15th or 48 hours after the Stanley Cup is awarded (whichever is later). It ends 5pm June 30th.

There is a secondary buyout window that exists if a team goes to salary arbitration. It opens 3 days after a team's last salary arbitration case is settled or awarded and ends after 48 hours. For this buyout window a player must be on the team's reserve list as of the previous trade deadline and must have a minimum AAV of I believe $3 million. Using this secondary buyout window can only be done 3 times by a team over the length of this current CBA.

This of course assumes no changes are made to the buyout rules for the expansion draft, which if the NHL and NHLPA agree to might happen.

All this talk about buying out. Do we really need the cap space next year that would make it worth it? Should have room to sign Gaudreau, Monahan and a goalie if we find one without a buyout no?

If we can't solve the 1st line RW problem in the off season or at the draft what about giving Poirier a shot at it during pre-season? I have not seen him this year but isn't he really fast with a good shot?

We don't like our guys. We know too much about them. We like other guys, from the fancy side of the fence.

You are correct. The Flames don't really need to buy anyone out, or even really trade anyone for that matter.

Assuming the cap will be as projected ($74 million) and the Flames sign:

Two goalies totaling $5 million
Johnny Gaudreau @ $7.5 million
Sean Monahan @ $6.0 million
Joe Colborne @ $1.8 million
Josh Jooris @ $1.0 million
Jakub Nakladal @ $0.9 million

That would give them a roster size of 23 and they'd still have $2 million in cap space.

This includes Raymond and Smid.

Gaudreau - Monahan - Ferland
Colborne - Backlund - Frolik
Bouma - Bennett - Jooris
Bollig - Stajan - Hathaway
Raymond

Brodie - Hamilton
Giordano - Wideman
Smid - Engelland
Wotherspoon - Nakladal

Goalie #1
Goalie #2

Again, roughly $2 million in cap space.

Still, I'm hoping for some changes/upgrades in a few places.

I think the problem regarding cap space is outline with your post though. There is simply no cap space to make the team better and it would probably be worse as we'd be without Hudler and Russell for the year.

Great post! Although, I'd say management has seen everything they want to in Raymond, so they'll probably bring up Shinkaruk/Poirier/Agostino in his place - and the Flames can't buy two goalies with $2 million, but otherwise, good mockup.

Call me crazy, but I think Raymond will be a top 6 fixture next year. Contract year + awakening after being demoted.

This mock up has them spending $5 million on goalies, not $2 million. That's easily done IMO.

Pittsburgh doesn't have a first. I wonder if that Dallas pick is enough to get us Matt Murray?

Otherwise we could probably package Wideman @50% retained + Florida's 2nd/Our 3rd to get another 1st
