so Hudler has a bad year this year and was still on pace for 54 points. That is a solid second line player if you ask me. With the available UFAs this year how is he not on your short list. Also no need to really protect him in expansion if no one want him

It'd be downright foolish and unlike Treliving to sign a 32-year-old right winger who is experiencing a dip in production.

did it dip or has it been steady and last year was an outlier

Hello Milan Lucic.
Lucic, Backes and McGinn (2nd liner) would all fit the bill IMO.

I wouldn't say the Flames want nothing to do with Hudler. I would expect they would welcome him back with open arms, actually.

What they would want nothing to do with is the contract Hudler would command. I just can't see him not signing a deal with both term and dollars. Flames just can't fit him in, and need to save those dollars for their own home-grown talent + UFA signings that can potentially fill in holes better.

Would be surprised if he signed anything less than a 4 year, 20 million dollar deal. He would be a 'nice to have' on the Flames, but that is too rich with respect to where the Flames are cap-wise moving forward.

Oh it dipped. Hudler may have gotten some points here and there but his overall play was absolutely horrid for the majority of the year. Unless he rebounds huge, you don't want to touch that guy. Old, slowing down, small, non-physical. Not a recipe for great success in his mid 30's.

Hudler, Russell, and Ramo were not the worst players and were not squeezed off the roster. The team was not improved by subtracting them, though it stands to improve in the future because of the assets gained in those trades. If you can bring one or more of those players back without giving up any of the assets from the trades, that's not necessarily the wrong thing to do. It depends on the cap hit, the term, who's ready to be promoted from the AHL, and what else is out there on the UFA market.

Jones, on the other hand, is one CPer's pet obsession. I haven't heard anybody else suggest bringing Jones back even as a joke.
What it boils down to is: Is Hudler the best possible option for the Flames and he clearly isn't. I don't even think he's a good option for them. There are way better options through UFA and likely through trade as well. Lucic, Backes, Okposo, Hayes, McGuin, and I'm sure a lot more would better suit this team. Hudler is getting older he doesn't seem to be putting up points like he should or he's expected to. He's also pretty soft and the team needs to improve on that department.

Hudler is not the answer and I can't see him taking a cap friendly contract either.

It's largely irrelevant. He'll be wanting to be paid closer to the outlier than what he now is and he's 32. That alone makes the discussion immaterial to whether he should be signed

Wonder if hudler will be settling for something cheap this summer.

He'll have to have an impressive playoffs if he wants to score huge. I think there's a lot of GM's that wouldn't consider giving him a big deal. Be interesting to see who the Panthers end up playing first round and if injuries end up getting him a chance on the top two lines.

He didn't have a bad year. He had a year that is in-line with what he has done for most of his career. The year before is the anomally not the norm.
He is too slow
He is too small

In the NHL now that's a tough combo. If you want to contend you are going up against big, fast teams, particularly in the west. If Hudler is skating in your top 6, the match-ups won't be good.

And I believe, with no proof, that he isn't an entirely positive presence in the room.

I'm not sure if the position is best addressed via free agency.

^ Kyle Okposo can be bought in free agency. He'd be a near-perfect fit on the first line.

Been watching some highlights, killing time. I really hope BT sends a couple picks to the Rangers for RFA Kevin Hayes.

6'5"
235lbs
23 years old
Decent skater
Good shot
Heck of a set of mitts on him
Can play all three forward positions

Would love to see him on Johnny's opposite wing again, this time with Monahan as their center.

Well his brother Jimmy went for Reilly Smith who's a young 20+ goal scorer this year.
Brett Connolly went for two 2nds.
K. Hayes's value is probably somewhere around that range.

Exactly what I was thinking.

I love having picks, but if you get a good young player for them who has proven he can play in the NHL at a young age, and has a lot of qualities that your team could use, then trading away those picks is just fine by me. Just like Hamilton last year.

He would. But at what price? I bet he nets north of 7.0/7.5M with term.
Risky.

I like it. Way too optimistic but I like it. I can't see Monahan signing for less than Barkov and the Reiner cap hit seems a touch light

Yes, so Backes would be a bad idea. Especially since his production has permanently dipped a lot more than Hudler's.

No. Backes' numbers seem pretty consistent to me. He's usually around 25 goals and 60 points.

The big thing though is that Backes brings more when he's not scoring. More leadership, hitting, grit, etc. Backes makes your team harder to play against. Hudler? Much less so.
