I feel that all teams should protect equal number of players. I also can't see the NHLPA allowing players with NMC being exposed because having a player chosen by an expansion team is a movement. So, the teams either have to put the players with NMC on their protected list or get them to waive for that scenario.

Is there any team that would have more players with NMC than the protected list allows?

I think they should be protected for two reasons:

1) Players often leave money on the table. The understanding is that barring a buyout or retirement, that player stays on that team for the duration of the contract unless said player agrees to be moved. I am fine if a team asks a player if he would consider being exposed to the expansion draft, but it should be the player's choice. That is what the clause essentially means in my opinion, and players have often opted to leave money on the table in order to get that say.

2) It works for the Flames! Stajan is the only guy that will be affected by the looks of it. Imagine teams with 5 or more NMC/NTC players on their roster? That would seriously shake-up some rosters, and force teams to move players. Calgary could benefit directly from teams trying to trade players so they don't lose someone for nothing, and Calgary may benefit indirectly by having some really good players available on other teams thereby helping to perhaps pass-up on one of Calgary's players that they don't wish to be moved.

I am sure Calgary would ask Stajan to waive and be traded to some other team, or agree to the expansion draft exposure. If not, Calgary could buy Stajan out and it wouldn't be the worst thing. I think Calgary is in pretty good shape comparatively.

Just imagine the expansion draft hitting when Calgary had all those NMC on the roster circa 2009 or 2010. That is what some teams will be faced with. Good!

This will only affect players with a NMC. A NTC only protects from trade.

Keep seeing people mention NTCs. They are not at issue for the expansion draft.

The team with the most NMCs for 2017 is Chicago. Hossa, Toews, Kane, Seabrook, Keith, Hjalmarsson, and Crawford.

The Flames have 0 NMCs for 2017 if you exclude Wideman who's contract will expire on July 1, 2017.

This is why I said teams must be treated equally. If you give NMCs a free pass, Chicago's entire core would be exempt. And they would still have 10 players and another goalie to protect. A total of 16 skaters and 2 goalies.

In other words, an entire team.

Is it fair to a player with a NMC that they can just be shipped from the best team in the NHL to the worst team?

Where he will continue to get paid.

The original team would retain the ability to protect them.

Do you think it's fair that Chicago's entire core should be exempt and they be allowed to protect more players than any other team?

If it gets decided that NMCs do prevent movement by expansion draft the only fair way to do it is that players with NMCs are automatically counted towards the team's protected list.
