You are right. Paying 5+ for a guy to be a 6/7 doesn't work well cap wise. Which is exactly the reason that the Flames might be stuck with him. There are 29 other teams in the NHL that have cheaper options like Nakladal.

If there is a trade out there that doesn't involve retaining salary or taking back another garbage contract, well yeah, take it and run but I just don't see it. Hope I'm wrong though.

Really, the Flames management boxed themselves in on this one by having 6 D signed for next year all making over 2.9. Might just have to tough it out for one more season. And like I said before there is always the possibility of a bounce back season. Players tend to have good years when their contract is up.

Few teams in the league have two better right shooting power play dmen than Wideman. I'm guessing you could count them on one hand.

Bet there's a couple teams that don't even have a right shot dman in their top 4. That's the type of team that would want him.

If you wanna prove me wrong, show me all the teams that have two better right shooting powerplay dmen better than Wideman.

and a team is going to trade for him to be more of a specialist, not a top 4 guy. With 1 year left on his deal, the fact that he has been able to put up big points and that he can be had for a decent cost (I'm guessing the Flames would almost take anything), I think he'll be traded at the draft.

How about I name a team that doesn't. The Calgary Flames.

The righties are Hamilton, Engelland, Nakladal and Wideman. Hamilton I'll give ya. Engelland isn't even in the conversation. And Nakladal? The guy has 2 NHL points.

How about we just wait until opening night and see what the roster is.

And has Nakladal looked better than Wideman? Yes. Did our associate coach in charge of the defensemen say Nakladal has one of the best point shots in the game? Yes, surprisingly he did. And Nakladal's shot does look amazing.

Were you watching Wideman and Nakladal this year or just judging them on points?

To me, Nakladal and Joki appear to be the perfect 5/6/7 defencemen that contending teams need. Very serviceable dmen that provide reasonable levels of size and skill while also coming in at manageable cap hits. Fast forward a year when Wideman, Engelland (who I like) and Smid are off the cap and our d core should be in a great spot.

Lots of teams employ a forward on the point on at least one of their PP units.

You don't turn to Sportsnet "personalities" for the latest quotes from Brad Wall?

By choice? or for lack of better options?

Uhm....ya, I have watched the Flames this year. Nakladal has looked good on the powerplay but points also matter. For Nakladal to pass Wideman on the powerplay he is going to have to hit the back of the net a few times.

Cloutier says Nakladal has one of the best shots in the game? I wouldn't call that surprising seeing as the management and coaches seem to think that the Flames are in the middle of a Stanley Cup dynasty.

And if it's just about the shot, Wideman has the best on the Flames in years IMO. But then again, I also used to say that about Anton Babchuk. Yuck.

But whatev. You think that there will be a good trade out there for Wideman this summer. I don't. Either way, I'm not going to lose any sleep over it. We will see how it all plays out this summer.

Devante Smith-Pelley has 7 goals and 10 points thru 9 games with the Devils since being traded.

He went from averaging 11 minutes per game with the Habs to 16+ with the Devils. Amazing what can happen with a change of scenery and a little bit of leash.

We'll see if he can keep it up, but I always wished the Flames would trade for him.

6'0
230lbs
Right hand shot
Good skater
23 years old

Would have fit like a glove.

Rumor is that he had conditioning issues with the Habs. Probably put him in the doghouse right from the start with Therrien.

You mean they need to be the dominant life forms all over the earth for 140 million years?

I wonder if the Flames would have any interest in giving Daniel Pribyl a shot.

6'3'' 238lbs C/RW shoots R 23 years old
http://www.eliteprospects.com/player.php?player=101160

Plays in the Czech league. 2nd in league scoring only to Roman Cervenka. He signed an extension with his Czech club, but per the press release there are out clauses for playing abroad. Former 6th round pick in 2011 by the Canadiens.

Number 74 in this video if you can pick him out
