I imagine tearing your tricep and missing the remainder of the season does not bode well for someone's trade value.
Any way you slice it, moving on from Wideman is going to be difficult for Calgary. He's not a hot commodity.

How would you know? Burke said they got calls at the deadline abut him while he was still suspended. Top 4 defensemen with right hand shots often can be hot commodities.

Ideally they would trade him. If thats not possible, and they buy Wideman out, they get $3.5 million in cap space right away. If they keep him, they would be severely limited in what sort of moves could be made to bolster the forward ranks or even goaltending via free agency. At least for this upcoming season. Thats why I personally think they look at buying out Wideman and Raymond. We'll see what comes of Smid's injury I suppose.
Wideman and Raymond will be hard to trade this off season, and at least in Wideman's case I think he and the team would like to go their separate ways.

Apparently the flames have been trying to trade Wideman for years.
Why haven't they? Too Greedy/Asking too much in return? Seems more likely to me that teams are kicking tires but not putting in offers. Buzzards circling a carcass.
Do we think tearing his tricep and not being able to get into a game or two prior to next season is going to increase his value?
Was his value so high previously that even with a torn tricep he's a 'hot commodity'?
I think the answers to these questions are pretty obvious.

Wideman will be dealt and I doubt the Flames take on salary or a bad contract. Look at Yandle from NYR, he's a UFA and I'm sure more than one team will be interested in him, the team that doesn't get him will be looking for a replacement and getting a proven guy like Wideman on a one year deal for likely less than what Yandle will get doesn't look so bad.
The big issues are Stajan, Bolig, Raymond and Engelland. Smid will likely be on LTIR so he's not a concern. Those 5 guys count for almost 14 million in salary, if they can find a way to get out of those deals they'd be doing great. I really hope they buy out Stajan if they can't find someone to take him... The Flames really need to trim some of those guys from the roster this year.

Wideman only has one year left. Why not just play him? He will be in a contract year and might have a bounce back season. Either way, the contract will expire and the problem will solve itself.

I know I know, you want at least 1 veteran on the line. but you never know, they could have instant chemistry and if are sheltered as much as possible ... you never know. And yes highly highly unlikely and should not be banked on considering neither of the two is showing close to readiness

Exactly why they wouldn't have to retain salary or take a bad contract back. If they can't just straight up trade him, they'll play him and they can always deal him at the deadline if they were out.
As much as people hate on Wideman, he isn't that big of an issue right now.

Yes, Kevin Hayes might be a decent young add, and might not cost a ton to acquire either.
Same could be said for his brother in Boston as well.
Two big boys that would make this team heavier, but neither are very physical.

Because he's been passed by Hamilton and Nakladal. Paying 5+ million to a guy to be our 6th or 7th dman doesn't really work well cap wise and prevents us from acquiring forward help this summer.

Burke said they had no interest in moving him at that time. I'd expect his value to be higher in the offseason when a greater number of teams could be in on him.

Look at the way Sam Bennett plays. Now imagine how he'd play with Lucic riding shotgun.
People pencilling in Frolik as our third-line RW are unrealistic about what we can hope to find to fill the first two lines. If we're lucky, we draft a forward this year who quickly develops into a top-six winger. If we're lucky. To expect that, and then to expect to pick up a UFA better than Frolik, and that Shinkaruk/Poirier will be better than Frolik in a couple years seems pretty unlikely.
I see Frolik as one of the top-6 wingers, and the Flames still needing two more.

I think Frolik on the third line works so well because of the chemistry with Backlund and Colborne. That leaves a spot on the second line for a prospect to take and gives the third line an element of defense and offense that would be amazing.

I'm not sure. Perhaps he didn't want to waive before. Perhaps having more than 1 year left on his deal earlier was an impediment.
Pretty sure he'd waive now. It's a contract year and he might not even get powerplay time here ahead of Nakladal and Hamilton. He's not gonna want to play 3rd pairing in his contract year when he could waive and play top 4 elsewhere. And he may want to get away from the Canadian media to put the linesman incident behind him.

Nope. Shouldn't hurt it either.

Those were your words not mine. Hot commodity is probably a slight exaggeration. But there's going to be teams interested and he has trade value.

Even if Frolik is iced on what is dubbed the 3rd line, he would still log big minutes as him and Backlund would form the #1 PK unit. I think we could see a 2A/2B setup with the middle two lines, where one line (Bennett) gets favourable zone starts/matchups since the other (Backlund) takes on the heavies and a lot more D-zone starts.
It could potentially look like this:
Gaudreau + Monahan + ??? = #1 line
Colborne + Bennett + ??? = 2A
Backlund + Frolik + ??? = 2B
Stajan + spare parts = #4 line
Then the ??? could be UFA/draft pick/internal options
e.g. Bouma - Backlund - Frolik
