This is one of those cases where it's likely better to "even if you think it, don't say it".

Quote:
Indian Wells CEO Raymond Moore said that women players ride the coattails of the men in comments before Serena Williams met Victoria Azarenka in the finals of the BNP Paribas Open on Sunday. Later, he apologized, but not before Williams had a chance to react.

"I think the WTA [Women's Tennis Association] -- you know, in my next life when I come back I want to be someone in the WTA, because they ride on the coattails of the men," he said, according to multiple reports. "They don't make any decisions and they are lucky. They are very, very lucky. If I was a lady player, I'd go down every night on my knees and thank God that Roger Federer and Rafa Nadal were born, because they have carried this sport. They really have."
Hooo boy.

Serena and Vika handled it very well today.

That said for sure Serena will never return to Indian Wells again.

Damn, not much you can do when Joker is dialed in like he was today. I wish Milos could have avoided the bagel in set 2. Oh well.

Breaking news from Nole, Milos may have reaggravated his adductor injury. We're about to enter the meatiest part of the schedule so this could be terrible for his season.

How concerning is it that every time Raonic loses a big match, he gets injured and then misses 4-6 weeks?

Raonic has been very fortunate with his draws this year. Not that he hasn't been playing fantastic tennis. But as was shown yesterday he still has no hope to beat Djokovic with his game. And with his current ranking he could line up against Djoker in the round of 16.

It was May last year when the injury bug really bit him. If he stats healthy and continues strong tennis through that stretch he'll vault up the rankings as he has no points to defend from last year. Especially if he does well at the French. He could be in the top 5 around Wimbeldon.

Funny how the discourse on Raonic varies greatly. Read an article on Sportsnet praising him for his performance this far. And then a scathing article in the Globe and Mail about how he's a choke artist and will never rise above.

Serena will be back next year as the tournament will have a new CEO.

Those comments were basically career ending.

I'm surprised he's held onto his job this long after those comments.

Ya, he can't have too much longer. This has been a huge international story, Novak's comments didn't help

Well, in Novak's defense, name one sport where women are paid as much as men?

If you're the #1 men's player in the world and your prize money is the same as the women who draw considerably less, I can understand why you'd make that comment.

Not sure what the hormones thing was about, hopefully a "not my first language" issue.

I suppose I can understand the argument regarding the numbers drawn playing a factor, but equal pay is an issue much larger than sport... It's something tennis should pride itself on.

It's only equal pay if women generated equal revenue. Right now you could argue the women are overpaid or the men underpaid. Should the LPGA players get the same prize money as the PGA? Of course not, anybody would say that's ridiculous, because the revenue is not near equal. Why is it different for tennis?

Not that I really care, but I can see the Novak's point of view. He should be making more money compared to he comparable woman's player.

The golf comparison doesn't really work because it's not as if they're playing at the same tournament at the same time... And I totally agree that LPGA having the same payouts as the PGA wouldn't work because the money simply isn't there. But if one tournament is hosting men and women, should the champion of one side be paid more? Do the women not train and work as hard as the men? Does a championship mean less to a WTA player than it does to an ATP player?

And as Serena pointed out, the Women's final at Flushing Meadows last year sold out long before the men's did.

Bouchard got unwanted attention from the former Indian Wells CEO when he mentioned her by name as a good looking player who can garner attention for her looks.

I hope she puts in a good tournament here and breaks through into the semis or better, so she can turn the story into her tennis rather than her looks.

I thought besides the majors and a few other tournaments, the women and men are usually participating in different locations? I agree if they are in participating in the exact same tournament and location at the same time, they should get paid the same, but otherwise it should be based on revenues generated.
