Well, at least, the lower you finish, the less likely you move down much, if it all.
It's time for luck to swing in our favor, right? We got hosed in the 2005 lottery, and have never won one. Time to finish 7th and win one of the top 3 picks. Right? Right?

I would love to get dubois if we don't get the top 3, but this talk of mcleod or gauthier just depresses me. I mean they may end up being good players, just don't seem to have the same elite level as some of the top picks in this draft.

At least this year the draft doesn't fall off until the teens. 8th shouldn't be that much worse than 5th. This year actually works really well with the new lottery. The 3 lottery winners get the potential franchise/superstar players. Then you have the rest of the playoff teams all getting potential top two line forwards and top 3 dmen.
As for Gauthier and McLeod, I actually kind of doubt they'd be our pick. I guess I had Gauthier 9th on my list and didn't have McLeod.
If we're drafting 4 through 8 I think we get one of Tkachuk, Chychrun, Dubois, Juolevi or Nylander.

I had Gauthier at 6 or 7 on my list, but he is dropping. I am really mixed on him. He does fill a pressing need for the Flames though.
McLeod - I have to agree with FDW. I just don't see much 'elite' in any category. I mean, he is a great pick past the 10th slot and I think he is a 'fure sure' NHL'er, but somehow his overall skill-set just makes me think of him as a solid 3rd liner, with 2nd upside. Nylander (who is underrated for his toughness - doesn't shy away and is not undersized) in my eyes is a much more dynamic and legitimate 'top 6' or even top-line prospect.
I like Gauthier's size, and I think he moves around well. I think he has a really good NHL-ready shot. I am just not convinced he knows how to use his team mates better. If he had Tkachuk's hockey sense and/or non-stop motor, this kid would be rivaling the Finns. I love Gauthier for some reasons, but he leaves me wanting more. I see McLeod, and I think 'meh' - good player, but 'meh'.
If the Flames rise in the standings a bit more, I would bet they pick up a defencemen. No way I think will Dubois be available. Depending on what team picks him up, I see him going somewhere between 4 and 6. I can't see him going later than that. I have him 4th on my list - a very solid 4th ahead of Tkachuk, and just a smidgen below Puljujarvi (perhaps even with him on any given day).
I am just hoping that Dallas goes to the western finals, and hopefully the Flames would be able to package up that first with a couple of seconds (or all 3 if it takes that much) to jump up and grab Gauthier - and being if he is still around at 13-16 (which may be a reach). I am not sure I want the Flames taking Gauthier with their first, but I would love to walk out of the draft with a high-end defencemen/RW + Gauthier. That is more than likely just a pipe-dream. The upside is there with Gauthier - especially considering that he may actually fit really nicely opposite of Gaudreau in the long run, but just not sure he will actually work out (great tools, perhaps a bad toolbox kind of guy).

Are there any teams currently in a rebuild, or looking as though they may start one, whereby it could make sense for the Flames to trade their 1st round pick in the upcoming draft for immediate help?
I'd like to see the Flames start making the playoffs next season, and as it appears to be a 7-9 overall pick this season, it's unlikely the drafted player plays right away.
Obviously, the Flames aren't in a position where this is necessary... though, is it time for the Flames to start thinking this way? ... or is it a season or 2 too early?

Can we trade Jankowski, Hanowski, and 2 2nds for Matthews?

I don't know about using our 1st, but I'd be very interested in trying to acquire JVR. Big, mid 20s and on a good deal. Our LW depth behind Gaudreau is weak and/or unproven and could use the size and skill JVR would bring.

Are we in Jake Bean range now? Maybe that legendary moron who called in overtime and demanded we only pick Calgary Hitmen can have his wish.

No, still about 15 points away from that. Flames would have to win out to get into that territory.

What about Blake Wheeler out of WPG??? He's 30, though ...too old to be moving our 1st, unless WPG adds a lesser or later 1st, or something
Anyway, he'd look good with Monahan and Gaudreau

Skinner is the only other player I can think of right now...less value than Wheeler though, obviously...though he is several years younger
Would you like to see the Flames target Skinner, JVR or Wheeler if it meant giving up picks in this upcoming draft?

Cool. Thought he was a top 10ish pick, guess not.
When is FC releasing their draft guide?

Bean may go top 10-15. However as an averaged sized offensive defence man I'm not sure he fits our needs as well as some other players given how deep we are on PMD both at the NHL level and in our prospect base (Kylington, Andersson). We may pick in the range he could go but I'd be surprised if we took him

I have no hopes of winning the lottery and have resigned myself to just hoping the Oilers don't win either. I'm mentally preparing myself to get bumped the full 3 places from teams behind us in the standings winning the 3 lottery picks. I think we've used up all of our draft luck on Monahan, Bennett and finding Brodie and Gaudreau in the 4th round.

Can't lie these meaningless wins are a bit depressing. Things have worked out in the past though with Monahan and Bennett so I hope once again they do the same. That top 3 pick is looking like a pipe dream now though.

Flames have ran into a little soft stretch in the closing schedule with some bad teams in the Jets, Habs, Leafs but things ramp up a bit with the Wild (twice), Hawks, Ducks, Kings (twice), and Coyotes (they stink but own the Flames this season) so if they lose all those games they may drop a few spots. The Flames aren't very good at tanking but all hope is not yet lost.
