I think we can get someone for pretty cheap. Who are we competing with in the goalie market? What other teams are looking for starting goaltending?
Winnipeg possibly, Toronto, us... I can't think of anyone else who doesn't have a settled and/or expensive guy on their roster.
Lots of teams might be looking to pick up a backup or 1b type guy, but we're one of the only ones who can offer the starting job, I think that gives us a lot of leverage.
I wouldn't mind Raanta (I like Finnish goalies) the UFA I really want is Reimer. If we're trading for someone I want Neuvirth, I'm gun-shy about going after another Ducks goalie.
2 years, 3.5 per for Reimer, qualify Ortio for a season, let them fight it out and give Gillies at least a full year, maybe 2 starting for Stockton.

I think if they don't go the UFA route, they could quietly sneak Darling out of Chicago. There's just more flexibility with a move like that and the Hawks not only ensure a return but I almost think they are classy enough an organization to send him somewhere that he can prove himself a starter and get his payday... that and he's replaceable to them IMO.

I hate this expansion draft hanging over the team's decisions for the next couple of years

Still don't get the Reimer love.. Guys been on a losing Leafs team his entire career and was never a difference maker... Suddenly he's going to be that for Calgary? ... Yikes poor guy will be the new whipping boy..

Lets hope the Flames have a goalie before the first day of free agency.
To be honest, I'm kind of afraid that Burke has an irrationally high opinion of Reimer. In Toronto, he was always set on Reimer being the future starter.

I like Reimer's career .926 5v5 save percentage. I think that's the best single stat for judging a goalie. Right around .930 is where you see most quality NHL starting goalies. Also, at 27 he's right at the age where goalies tend to make the jump to bonafide starters and he's already started almost 200 nhl games.
I think he's exactly the kind of guy we want: someone who can make quality starts while we wait to develop Gillies and might himself turn out to be something special.

Marc Andre Fleury. Treliving capitalizes on the Matt Murray hype train and acquires Fleury for a song.

I would probably put more blame on the supposed leaders like Phaneuf and selfish players like Kessel rather than the goaltender for a lot of the losing. This season they are purposely tanking so can't fault him for not being able to win in front of a roster consisting of AHL and NHL castoffs.

1B UFA to split time Ortio. We don't have the assets to be trading gor high end goalies and Ortio has shown he is completely capable of at least splitting starting duties.

Might as wel re-sign Ramo then. A 1B goalie to Ortio? If Ortio is our 1A goalie this team is already doomed for next season
Flames have 4 picks in the top 60 they have the assets to pull off a trade

In terms of who do I want to magically transport onto the roster: Murray followed by Andersen.
In terms of who do I think is available who is good enough to provide us insurance, cheap enough to be a bridge, and young enough to have future potential: Varlamov followed by Kuemper

Ramo will probably cost 4.5 million on a 2-year deal. I prefer a cheaper option on a short term deal (i.e. Kuemper, Elliot) or a better option on a slightly larger contract (i.e. Varlamov)

This. The Penguins probably want to clear some cap as well in order to get a winger or dman. If the Lightning are also in cap hell, Bishop would also be target

I will be pleasantly surprised if whoever we get is part of the final answer for years moving forward. I see the goalie we get for immediate help to be a place holder until Gilles either proves himself, or we acquire something better. Please avoid Howard, Smith, and Fleury due to their contracts.

I think that the Flames will be hard pressed to sign a UFA goalie.... they would have to overpay... no short term deals.
Hartley's system of generating offense from defensemen will give a goalie a very bad sv %.
Hiller was a starting NHL goalie (6 seasons with 25-30 wins) when he signed his 2 year deal with the Flames. Playing the Flames system blew out his confidence and finished his NHL career.

I think there will be a lot of re-tooling this offseason by organizations who have young goalies coming through the system. I think the expansion draft protection will cause a number of veteran goalies with term left on their contracts to be available this offseason. It will also be a buyers market.
i'd like a proven quantity in goal and on RW next year.
