8 years between $7-8 million would be sweet.

Term is key for me, and if the cap hit is lower than $7 million that'd be sick.

If it's 5 years of RFA then it could be a little lower than Tarasenko's AAV. I believe Tarasenko had 4 years of RFA?

10M
8 years @ 56M = 7M AAV would be good. They could front load a bit or work in some signing bonuses to insulate against CBA years if they wanted.

He doesn't need the cash. He's got all that sweet sweet sponsorship money from Pizza 73.

Plus, he only eats Skittles and store brand cheese slices, so it's not like his expenses are that high.

bridge deal would be silly for both sides; team doesn't really need to save money for the next 2-3 years, certainly not at the expense of a 10M contract later on.

Gaudreau should take the guaranteed big payday while it's there, and it would still set him up to sign another big deal at age 30. His UFA value would be considerably lower starting at age 32-33.

I am interested to know what the highest paid 2011 draftees are. All I know is that RNH makes 6 million a year, and he had signed a 6 year deal? Curious what the other alumni from the 2011 draft are making at the top end. I would expect Gaudreau's contact to surpass all of them, but would be interested in a comparison.

All I know is that it will still be peanuts in comparison to one of Jagr's past contracts (17.4 million - NHL salary record). Found it pretty interesting as to how quickly salaries rose at the top end throughout the years.

Team generating revenue in CAD in a resource based economy projected as "lower for longer" but paying salaries in USD couldn't benefit over the next 2-3 years?

Economists' projections do not support your assertion, with all due respect

Saad also makes $6 million per year.
Dougie Hamilton looks to be the top paid Dman at $5.75 million per.
Landeskog makes roughly $5.6m per.

So yes, I would expect Gaudreau to surpass all of those guys and the Flames will end up having the highest paid Dman from that draft and the highest paid forward, which is fitting as they are the best PPG forward and Dman from that draft to this point.

As anyone who's been there knows, once you start a family, everything changes. Might be homesick now, but when he has a family of his own that all kind of falls into the background. I would do a four year deal for $24-26-million and see where his head is at when he's 26.

That would give Gaudreau's camp a tremendous amount of leverage for the next round of contract negotiations. All he would have to do is sign his qualifying offer when the time comes and he would be one year from UFA. Might as well give him a blank check to full out. Pretty close to the same situation as Subban, who was able to leverage a similar situation into 8 x $9m.

What the hell was up with Francis and his ''analysis'' over the intermission during the Colorado game? Straight up saying he's ''heard whispers'' that Johnny wants to play out East ''sooner rather then later'' and the deal he signs won't be that long. Based off what Francis, absolutely nothing?? Way to stir the pot you buffoon.

Media just love to send panic to fans. While in college they were spreading rumours that Gaudreau will sign to a team in the East because he is from the East and wants to live close to home. Now they are trying to stir up things again by saying Gaudreau would leave the Flames sooner than later and are not willing to sign long term contract. Who is spreading this rumour? Eric Francis?? Francis is the Steve Simmons of the 80s who used to stir up false rumours about the Calgary Flames so people will read his articles from Calgary Herald.

Yeah, that's why I suggested three not four. A four year deal puts him too close to the UFA date for comfort.

Saying that I want a long term deal, 7-8 years, but would be fun at 2-3.

I don't know, I think us fans do a fine job of creating our own panic. I don't recall hearing too much from the media about Gaudreau wanting to stay close to home back when he was in college. Or at least I didn't hear half as much about that as I did all the self created panic around how Gaudreau wouldn't want to play here cause we weren't giving our crappy young players enough ice time so he'd be put off, and that he wasn't going to sign here cause Burke said he was small.

I've never heard anything about rumours like this until this article. I was about to say "Gaudreau trade rumours...brought to you by Canadian inferiority complex", until I realized Francis wrote the article. That figures.

Since moving back to the city, I'm getting used to his radio/TV segments and actually don't mind him on there. It almost made me forget how much I can't stand Eric Francis the print journalist.

Just out of morbid curiosity, I wonder what kind of offers BT would get if he dangled Gaudreau to Eastern US teams.

Say the Isles for instance. Could he ask for, and get something like Hamonic, Strome and the Isles 2016 1st?

Well, sort of. By insinuating there are rumours, or "whispers", he's doing more than that, though. He's creating, or helping to perpetuate, a baseless worry that he's then the saviour who defuses it. At least that's my interpretation, but I'm biases and don't like the guy
