So my wife is pretty much against anything that isn't cute, cuddly, or fluffy-furry. Lizards and frogs and anything else cool is out of the question. Or so I thought... If we get a house and I have a space of my own, and so long as she doesn't have to see it, I can get a creepy-crawly.
After much consideration, and a bit of research, I've landed on the ever elusive Armadillo Gilded Lizard (AGL for simplicity). He's a pretty cool looking dude that looks a lot like a baby dragon. In terms of upkeep, they are strikingly similar to many other lizard brethren. However, finding a breeder for said dragon-spawn is difficult. AGL tend to only have 1-2 babies a year, and will often take years of breeding off. Realistically a female AGL could only have 1 baby in a matter of 5 years. So the price of said lil lizzy could be upwards of $300-500.
My request, unto you CP brain trust, is to help me find a breeder in the BC/Alberta area. I have no qualms about entering the US either. If at all possible.
Also, are there any lizard experts that can help a brother out in terms of care and what-such? I'm a complete virgin in regards to non-dog related pets. Thanks in advance.
I've edited the thread title, as the AGL is a pipedream at this point, and I'd be willing to consider many other dragon-adjacent critters. I'd prefer to avoid anything too large, so many iguanoids are out of the running. I'd prefer nothing over 16 inches once full grown, as I'm concerned about enclosure size and possible space onstraints. As I've said previously, I'd like a more social and calm lizard. As well as something with a longer lifespan. I understand that the smaller the lizard the shorter the lifespan, but I'd prefer to not bury my buddy after 5 years or so.

Just doing a quick Google, it seems like you're going to have to pick a new pet. Doesn't seem to be much current info on them being available, plus apparently they're a protected species in Africa.
I'm sure some got out, but this is a needle in a haystack kind of thing.
Hello all due to unseen circumstances, I must sell my bearded dragon Mike because I will be moving to the West Coast and the move will be to stressfull for my guy. I have everything you need including lights, heat pad, hammock, big tank etc. Mike is a 5 year old Bearded Dragon with excellent health, he has a great appetite.. He loves cabbage and blueberries like you wouldn't believe. He is so easy going he just loves to lounge around.. watch tv with my daughter and sleeps on you. I've checked other lizard forums and there was relatively little data. I was hoping there would be some kinda Lizard Guy on CP. I mean, we have a guy for puppets, how can we not have a lizard guy. Am I gonna be the Lizard Guy?
Anyways, it does seem to be exceedingly rare. There are 77 different species of Armadillo lizard, and the Girdled lizard is the most sought after, and hardest to acquire. I think I might have to set my sights on a different reptilian best friend.
I'd prefer to not get a bearded dragon, considering how white bread they are. An old friend of mine had a few lizards growing up. A bearded dragon was one of them, and he didn't like it. He said it had very little personality and generally disliked people anywhere near his tank. He had another iguanoid that I can't remember that loved to crawl on people and eat fruit and bugs out of their hands. I'm kind of turned off of bearded dragons.

One thing to keep in mind is a bearded dragons life expectancy is about 5-7 years, one in good shape around 5 years in age may have a few more years left in him but it's hard to say. Depends on their condition.
My beardie Dante was healthy, fat and active. Then around 6 years of age he decided he was done eating, and that was it. Pretty simple to care for but they are picky about lights. Get a programmable timer and you are all set.

There is/was a guy out by Vulcan, that breeds and sells a ton of different animals and exotic pets. If he doesn't have anything, he may be able to help you find someone. I know nothing of this person except that I ran across his FB page once, so keep that in mind in terms of a recommendation lol. His FB page is Ty's Exotics, if I'm remembering it correctly. It's been a few years since I looked at the page.

Just out of curiousity, what do you do with your pet lizard when it dies? Do you bury it in the yard or do you have to call or vet or something? I've never owned a pet.
