I was like Frank. Here in London, numbers starting with a new area code will be starting in a the next few weeks, the phasing in period is almost over. Since I use the phone all the time at work I have finally gotten used to it.

[quote=Ultimately 10 digit dialing is what it is going to be, so best get used to it and avoid the other pitfalls that you might or might not expect.
Heck... I remember 4 digit dialing... yikes...[/quote]
Funny, I remember the 4 digit dialing as well - it was great - I guess we still sort of have that now at businesses.
The biggest problem I had when Vancouver when to ten digit dialing was remember NOT to put the 1 in front.
Anyway, people don't like change and would rather complain about it, rather than just getting it done. The only constant in life is change - getting your head around the change, getting past it, or better still figuring out how it is better is a whole lot better than pouting.

The small town where my grandmother lived had 4 digit dialing up until about 10 or 15 years ago; back then they only had one prefix.
I would guess Calgary went from 5 digit to 7 sometime back in the 40's or 50's.

I think the Who would play wherever the Saddledome is, probably Old Calgary...
Or on the giant wall of garbage seperating Old Calgary from New.

I don't see the big deal. I already dial the area first anyways. No adjustment needed for me.

I think the best solution for this is to seperate land lines into the (403) area code and put cell phones on the new one. That way if you know the type of phone you're calling the area code would be intuitive. But I'm living in BC and I hated having the (778) area, couldn't wait to get back to the normal one.

Are you serious, because I'm using Fido as my cell provider right now... but... nothing about long distance calls when I dial ANY 613 number... but Telus does that in Alberta... because I called using a telus cell from banff to Calgary and it said it was Long Distance, but not when I use Fido...
Do you know which part of Ottawa is considered Long Distance (like... St. Laurent or Nepean or others?)

Let me say that again...
My numbers are all programmed with 403 in my cell and house phone.

It's like calls between Kanata/Barrhaven and Orleans from residential lines. I'm not sure how it works for cellphones.

Why not just have Calgary be 403 and the rest be some other number or vice versa? That would be a hella lot better than having to dial an area code for some users and not for others.

Obviously it is wayyy down the road for canada, but here in italy, mobile phones are all 10 digit, plus a 4 digit prefix for country code... Plus a 3 digit prefix for continent.
If I call an italian mobile, 10 digits.
If I call a german mobile, 13 digits (or 14 if you dial 00 instead of +)
If someone calls me from NA, its 17 digits.
The strange thing is that old roman phone numbers can be 6 digits or 8.

I didn't know 7 digit dialing was even around anymore. Here in Portland we've been 10 digit dialing for 10 years.
Guess that's what happens as your city grows.

Looks like they've set a date for when this will come into effect. As of Sept. 12th 2008 we'll be dialing 10 digits for all our calls. 403 and 780 phone numbers will keep their area codes and all new numbers across the province after that date will receive a new 587 area code.

The CRTC announced today its approval of an industry plan to give new listings a new area code, 587, over the entire province by Sept. 12, 2008. Current numbers will keep the 403 area code in southern Alberta and the 780 in northern Alberta.

I'm used to 10 digit dialing having worked a lot in TO and Vancouver, but isn't that pretty stupid to not bound a new area code by geographic constraints? Otherwise it can be a real crapshoot as to whether it's one area code or another. At least if you know it's in Edmonton, it's a 780 code.
