In regards to Ortio, I thought that technically there was one game that he played in that was unclear. He needed to play 30 or more minutes in each of those games but in the game in question he took over and only played 29 minutes because the flames pulled the goalie for a penalty or late rally attempt.

I'd rather have Ramo in that situation to be honest.

I doubt it to be honest. I think like what Jiri said, he was promised at least one game and he's getting it. I don't think it's worth giving him a tryout contract next season. Just get a real goalie and solve the problem for good.

I'm all for success in the reverse standings, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't want Backstrom to come out an shut the door against the Habs. A good story + beating the Habs just feels too good.

I feel like they're going to give Backstrom a run of games. If only to see if there's anything left in the tank. I really do believe they want to see if Backstrom can be a solid contingency plan for next season if they fall short in the goalie market. They've covered Ortio's RFA status so they'll slow his starts.

I agree that Hiller for all intents and purposes is likely finished with the Flames barring any injury.

They should start Hiller versus the Leafs. You wanna dismantle your roster? We'll start the worst goalie in the league versus you.

Interesting to see them name goalies in advance. What happens if Ortio pitches a shutout tomorrow and then gets benched for a non back-2-back game? Surely the better idea would have been to start Ortio tomorrow and see how he does before deciding on Sunday's goalie. Then, even if he gets the start has a strong game Sunday, Backstrom could still go for Monday against the Leafs because its a back to back.
By announcing it in advance, they eliminate the posibility of Ortio feeling like he's getting "benched" after a good performance on Friday (if that's what happens). This way, it was just the "plan" for Sunday.

I'm sure Ortio is aware of the plan in regards to getting Backstrom some games, and there is likely some communication of the plan to him.

I suspect Jones asked for a trade and the Wild were the only team that bit. Can't see the Flames going to this trouble just for a 6th round pick.

The Leafs actually look quite decent lately with Soshnikov and Nylander playing. I'm a bit surprised. Soshnikov looks like a keeper for them. Babcock loves him. I think the Leafs could beat the Flames even if Hiller wasn't in net. The kids know nothing about tanking.

Might have done, but are the Flames really going to a lot of trouble on this. Goaltending has been the worst around here all season, really isn't much effort for them to throw Backstrom into a few games down the stretch. Really don't have anything to lose.

Plus, what how obliged to accomodate that trade request would the Flames feel. His contract was up at the end of this year, not like it would have been a big issue to keep him around an extra 45 days.

I'd rather him than Hiller. Looking forward to watching. Give him one or two starts, ride Ortio the rest of the way

Both Backstrom and Jones have friends around the league, and their agents have other clients in the league. It can't hurt the Flames rep to have two vets telling other players that the Flames organization will go out of it's way to help it's players any way they can.

Maybe this summer or next summer we make a UFA player an offer and they are considering it and a similar offer from another team. They call up their buddy Jones or Backstrom to get their thoughts on the Flames. It might make the difference in where they decide to sign.

Treating people well is always good business.

I think the Jones trade had more to do with the flames trying to open up a roster spot so they could try to get a look at some of their younger guys. If Jones isn't traded then I doubt Hathaway gets called up.

Agreed. You've got to see if Hiller can turn it around like Ramo did with enough starts. There's still time!
