Awesome. Draft changes in our likely highest pick ever year and an expansion draft likely falling on the end of our rebuild cycle.

They'll get some decent defencemen, but if teams are allowed to protect 7 forwards, the best they can hope for is a vastly overpaid 2nd liner.

I can see team leaving 18 and maybe 19 year old players in the CHL next year. That way they would not have to be protected, because they do not have 2 years as a pro.

I disagree.

If the draft were held right now:

The Isles would have to leave one of Hamonic, Leddy, Boychuk or De Haaan exposed.

The Preds would have to leave one of Weber, Josi, Ekholm or Ellis exposed

The Ducks would have to leave one of Fowler, Lindholm, Vatanen or Depres exposed

The Bolts would have to leave one of Hedman, Stralman, Garrison or Sustr exposed

Take the worst guy off all those lists and you have a pretty good top 4 defense, and that's just off the top of my head, and not even digging into forwards.

De Haan - Ellis
Depres - Sustr

I'd take that as a rebuilding defense any day.

La LNH doit négocier avec l'AJLNH pour déterminer si un joueur avec une clause de non-échange ou non mouvement est admissible.

Translation: NHL and NHLPA must negotiate whether players with NMC or NTC are eligible (for expansion draft).

If anything that helps teams like the Oilers who need defenseman. These teams will trade these players instead of losing them for nothing.

News Update

Elliotte Friedman @FriedgeHNIC
NHL hasn't decided on players with NMCs being eligible for expansion draft. But expectation is they will not be available for selection

So that sounds like you don't have to waste a protection spot on them.

I would hate if Wideman and Stajan were forced to be on our list because of their trade clauses.

Hoping this happens next summer then, then we won't have to use a protection spot on Eichel (would be a second year pro).

Wideman's contract will be expired, and the Flames would be stupid to not buy out Stajan before this could happen.

Wouldn't have to worry about Wideman. The earliest an expansion draft could happen is 2017 when his contract will expire.

By next summer (After July 1st 2017) his EL contract will have rolled into the third year.

Believe this will happen before the June draft. So Eichel and Kylington should be good no?

Expansion draft potential. Each team has option of protecting 3d, 7F and I goalie or 8 skaters +1 goalie. Expansion determined before draft
To compare - the last expansion draft teams could protect either one goaltender, five defensemen, and nine forwards or two goaltenders, three defensemen, and seven forwards.

So a lot few players being allowed to be protected this time.

Not liking the idea of losing Jokipakka or Nakladal (Assuming we sign him) for nothing... that would suck. Plus all of the prospects that will be exposed, like Kylington....

Expansion drafts suck.

Speaking of Kylington, theFan 960 is just reporting that he should be good to go soon from his concussion injury. He's partaking in full practice and it's all about his conditioning to get up to speed going forward.

By the end of next year you'll have a better idea if Poirier and Shinkaruk need to be protected. If they aren't contributing in the NHL next year - probably a good chance you leave them unprotected.

I hate the idea of adding a completely new team to begin with. I'd far prefer to have fewer teams in this league.

NHLPA on NMCs:

Las Vegas - "eligible"

Quebec City - "not eligible"
