They haven't granted any expansion teams yet, and the earliest they would start playing is 2017-18 (the longer it takes to award the franchises, the more likely it is that the start date gets moved back).
They won't do an expansion draft until the summer before the teams start to play. Otherwise, all the players would be stuck without a team for a year.

perfectly reasonable solution.

They should let every team protect 5 players, then have a complete dispersal draft.
Why? Because it would be neat.

My guess is protection will be something like 5 forwards, 3 defencemen, 1 goaltender.
if it's any less than that though I will be mad af
Gaudreau
Monahan
Bennett
Backlund
Frolik (or 2016 1st rounder)
Brodie
Hamilton
Giordano (or 2016 1st rounder)

They should be able to skip the oilers and either pick 2 from a different team or pass all together.

No way! They should be able to take even more players from the Oilers than from any other team.
It should be:
- Pick
- Pick from the Oilers
- Pick
- Pick from the Oilers
And so on and so forth and etcetera. Oh! And the Oilers should be allowed to protect any players.
Call it the 'No Good' Tax.

I'm sure they will want to, because outside of their last six top-7 1st round picks, Klefbom, Eberle and Talbot, there isn't anything worth a damn in their entire organization. It's pretty obvious those players will be protected so it leaves a literal poo poo platter for the expansion team to pick from. It's just yet another instance where the Oilers get to benefit from their own ineptitude.

The funny thing will be when the Oilers have to leave a golden boy unprotected, and the expansion team doesn't event want them. The Oilers should try to disperse their entire team except McDavid and get in on it too.

I think since there is a salary cap, maybe there will also be a max/min salary cap restriction on the protected list as well. For example, a team can protect an unlimited amount of contracts as long as it doesn't exceed the cap
Or maybe something to do with age groups (for example a team can only protect x amount of players in age group 18-22, 23-27, 28-33, and so on).
That will make things interesting.

There should be a lottery where all 30 teams' best under 25 players are entered and a handful are drawn to go to each new team.
Of course what's not divulged by the league is that this is rigged so that McDavid is one of the players picked, to make up for the all the undeserved 1st overalls that that team has been gifted and subsequently squandered with incompetence.

Sure! Let's swap Gaudreau for Adam Larsson!

Lets say they do 5 fwds, 3D, 1G
Is this strictly roster players or prospects from the farm too?
If farm players were included, I have a bad feeling our farm depth would be picked apart.
Also, what about recently drafted players? Guess that potentially falls in both roster player/ farm prospect.
But with JG, Monny, Bennett, Frolik, (would this last spot have to be used to protect one of the big 3 in this year's draft)?...
I would prefer if each team had to submit a list of 10 players they leave exposed and 5 players from the farm.
Wideman
Hiller
Stajan
Bollig
Engalland
Smid
Colborne
Jooris
Bouma
Hathaway
(Last 3 are unfortunate and you hope they don't get picked up)
Farm
Raymond
Seiloff
BVB
Shore
Orr
Type thing.
I understand the NHL wants these expansion teams to be competitive right off the hop. But they can't expect the expansion teams to be playoff contenders right out of the gate. That's not realistic.
But there are going to be some gems out there that teams cannot protect.
Such as players like Bouma, Jooris or Hathaway which contribute to teams overall success.
But the league can't expect top players to be exposed. That's just simply unfair.

^They want the expansion teams to be competitive, so I imagine they will try to avoid re-creating the 1992/93 Ottawa Senators.

Renaud Lavoie on the Fan 960 today was talking about how the GMs are looking at these issues in Boca Raton. He suggested that each team might be required to expose a group of players with a certain total cap hit (or greater). This would prevent the teams from exposing nothing but minimum-wage plugs, and would help the expansion team(s) reach the cap floor without battling for UFA scraps.
Of course, every team would then expose its very worst contracts to try to dump them via the expansion draft, but that's probably going to happen anyway.

This is all so annoying to me.
Flames go into a much needed rebuild, start acquiring all sorts of nice young assets and all of a sudden it's looking like they're going to open up player exposure in an expansion draft. Not to mention that they change the draft lottery rules too so that the worst teams have less odds at picking high.
Bunch of ****ing baloney IMO.

To address the cap issue, I think that teams should eat some of the cap hit for players they expose. So if you only expose high cap hit players, it increases the likelihood that you'll be eating a lot of salary.
Definitely don't like the idea of the Flames losing quality prospects. Would rather see expansion teams get picks and let them sort out their own destiny.
