Craig Conroy Fan960
Craig Conroy currently discussing Gaudreau contract. Remarkably loose lipped regarding contract talks. No specifics but discussing length, Says 5 years not a option, Will be 5+ . Just tuned in so dont know where the conversation started. I am sure it will be posted online shortly.

Taking a while to get to 5000

I caught a bit of it
- intimated that Matthews is their 1st choice but they like the fins (no big surprise news here)
- Chychrun won't be NHL ready next year
- Johnny will be a tough negotiation, but then says he figures (Johnny) won't want to play elsewhere. he likes it here , has had success here. Conroy's (former) agent is Johnny's agent
- Not going to get Johnny on a 5 year deal. Expects longer
- Didn't argue when Boomer suggested Ramo & Hiller won't be back
- Goaltending will be a #1 priority. Will look everywhere
- Conroy spending his time now watching draft eligible players

Conroy admits prices for goalies are too high in trades right now because teams know it is our weakness. They didn't have the picks last summer to make a trade for a goalie after the Hamilton trade. Boomer chimed in "well you do now" and Conroy agreed. A goalie is Treliving, Burke's #1 priority in the off-season. They are looking all over, Europe, KHL etc. Mentions how Kipper came out of nowhere and are looking for that next guy.
On another note Boomer sure isn't afraid to rip the Flames and their decisions to management's face. I imagine if any radio host was that critical of the Oilers in Edmonton they'd get canned. Haha

The tone that Conroy discussed Gaudreau almost makes me want to believe this one is closer than one might think.
I did not Hear anything regarding Monahan, was he mentioned in contract talks?
Did not sound like either goalie would return but did mention that "Bob likes Kari"

5 years is not an option because it will bring Gaudreau right to UFA and won't buy any UFA years.

He also said he personally would be comfortable if Ortio was one of the goalies next year.

I'm not sure they believe Matthews is the clear-cut #1? Boomer directly asked Conroy if Matthews was the #1 and he replied "The Finns are pretty good"

He's looked good. We may go for Reimer as he wouldn't cost us any assets, and it's a priority for us.

Probably posturing for potentially trading up or down. Conroy has always been pretty careful in not tipping hands of where they have prospects ranked before the draft.

Conroy has always been very conservative in these interviews previously and that's exactly why I am surprised he gave so much information regarding Johnny.
Personally I really enjoy seeing Conroy in this position with the flames.

Trading down to #3 in the draft is my dream scenario. What's the jump from #1 to #3? A mid first?

I don't remember it being very expensive in the past. I doubt you'd get another first. MAYBE a second, more likely a third or fourth.

I think that would be terrible value. When teams want to trade up to number 1 they basically have to give up their top prospect plus the other top pick. It never happens which is why 1st overalls are rarely traded.
If the Flames pick 1st and the Coyotrs pick third I would want Strome+3rd for Matthews

A first overall pick has not been traded in over 10 years. The Fins are awesome but Matthews is on another level. A 15th pick plus 3 is not enough to trade down in my opinion

Bennet can play wing if Flames get Matthews. Having a natural centre play wing works well.
Gaudreau - Matthews - Bennett is a pretty sweet first line. Money as 1B centre and Backlund as 3C is pretty good.

It's not like it's a national secret the Flames want to lockup their star 22-year old player for as long as they can.

Top prospect plus a pick probably.
Something like (Fischer OR Garland OR Dvorak) + 2nd from ARI
Something like Werenski + 2nd from CBJ
I don't think you could move down for much less, too risky that Matthews becomes amazing. Steep price but certain teams could choose to meet it.

The first-overall pick was traded for the third-overall in both 2002 and 2003 (the last time the first-overall pick was traded).
In 2002, Columbus and Florida swapped picks. The only other compensation Florida got was the ability to swap first round picks with Columbus in 2003. As it turned out, Florida ended up winning the lottery in 2003, so they didn't exercise their option to swap.
In 2003, Florida traded picks with Pittsburgh. Florida gave the first-overall pick and their own third rounder (73rd) that year to Pittsburgh for the third-overall pick, a late second round pick (55th), and Mikael Samuelsson.
Not really a king's ransom in either case.

Don't want to trade down from #1 overall if the Flames are lucky enough to get it.
Don't want to trade Monahan either.
Gaudreau - Monahan - ?????????
Bennett - Matthews - ?????????
Yes please.
