What are the odds that Dubois is still around at #6?

I'm preparing myself to be drafting 6th/7th.

There is a real possibility he goes 4th or 5th. I haven't watched him in the Q recently but someone had mentioned that his scoring is even better when he plays center? Honestly if we pick 4th I would be thrilled with Dubois

It's hard to say. There's a good chance the top 3 goes as expected but after that it's really hard to tell, especially since we don't know the draft order yet.

Guys that I think are favourites right now to go in the 4-8 range would be Tkachuk, Chychrun, Juolevi, Dubois, Nylander.

Mike McLeod, Jake Bean, Mikhail Sergachev, Dante Fabbro and Julien Gauthier (seems like he might be dropping) are a few longer shots to go in that range that could surprise.

Which order they will go in is pretty much impossible to predict without some information about which teams might prefer which guy.

With the draft lottery being a little over a month away I know a lot of posters here are preparing for the worst in terms of draft order but I'm really hoping (as most are) that the flames win the coveted first overall pick.

Admittedly I haven't seen Matthews play a whole lot aside from YouTube clips but as I read more and more about him from those who have, he's the player I would like to land in the hands of the Flames. Not sure if it was posted in this thread but last month Crawford said an 18 year old Matthews is a better player than the likes of Benn, Daniel, Henrik, and Kopitar all were at the age of 19.

Crawford may be a little biased as he is currently Matthews' coach but nevertheless, who ever wins the lottery is going to acquire a fantastic player.

I'm torn. I want the Flames to win a "GD lottery" (thanks burkie) for once, and get a stud in Matthews.

...But the other part of me wants to see the Oilers and their mullet fans get the 1st overall again and see the likes of North America and certain parts of Europe absolutely melt down and rage. It would be quite the spectacle. Oilers would hoard their upper deck branded 5x 1st overalls and wouldn't trade a single one, and would challenge for their unprecedented 6th 1st overall the very next season.

The only travesty from the latter would be hearing about them in the media whilst they play in their new 3 iron shaped building, and seeing yet another talent turn into a diving, goal overcelebrating fool that lavishes the importance of putting up numbers over winning.

Is Dubois also an agitator type player? his stats show a lot of PIM.

I would also really like to do well on the lottery and pick top 3. If the Flames had an elite first liner, they'd be much better than if they got a second liner.

And historically, the top 3/4 picks are often first liners, and the forwards taken from 5-10 are often second liners (with lots of exceptions).

A quote from a scout in THN's futures issue compared him to Iginla, of all players, saying he has a strong north-south game and scores NHL-style goals. It sounds like he enjoys engaging physically.

Really hoping the Flames draft him if they pick out of the top-three.

Not an agitator, but I've read that he's a Jamie Benn clone who has some discipline issues he needs to iron out.

I'm trying my darndest to not get my hopes up for any of the top 3.

My only request is that we can draft a player that can play and contribute on this team next year.

A common thread with all contending teams is a very good to impact player on an ELC.

ELCs can slide for two years. A two-year incubation period gives you the most bang-for-buck compared to a guy like Monahan who's already an RFA before he's as developed as he needs to be.

Yes but for my own selfish timing I would like the team to contend sooner rather than later.

Well if he can discipline guys like Nurse, I don't have a problem.

As far as I can tell, Matthews is really the only one who you can be confident about contributing right from the start next season. Then there's varying degrees of uncertainty. The Finns maybe after a short adjustment, maybe late in the season, depending on their progress from here on.

No reason to focus too much on top-3 anyway. Sounds to me like the Flames would have to be extraordinarily unlucky not to get a great pick.

I'm not sure why it is important they draft a player that can play next year. Next year I expect improvement but they won't be ready to contend.

I'm hoping for top 4 as I think Jakob Chychrun is being under-rated. If the Flames take him - it basically sets up the D for the very long term.

And then indeed the wings still need to be addressed badly.

The only thing I don't care about with respect to who we draft is whether or not they contribute next year.

For me, priority #1 is RW, so the Fins work best. If the Flames pick 5th and the first four picks are Matthews, Laine, Puljujarvi, and Dubois, then Chickren is the best alternative.

A deadly top 4 of Gio + Brodie + Hamilton + Chychrun with guys like Hickey, Andersson and Kylington in the wings would make the defense a strength for the next 10 years. After that, it would be all hands on deck to find forwards.

I don't know if I take Dubois over Chychrun
Right now my ranking would be
1. Matthews
2/3. The Finns (don't have a strong preference)
4. Chychrun
5. Tkachuk
6. Nylander
7. Dubois

After that I have no clue.

Because of this, and our historical luck with the draft, I'm expecting to get bumped down 3 spots to around the 6-8 range. So I'm hoping for Dubois.
