Russell was the #1 d-man on Dallas in their first place battle with the Hawks that they the Stars won 5-2.
He has been in the Stars top pairing for the last 4 games.
Something is wrong where Russell was supposed to be a #4/5 D-man on the worst team in Flames History and he goes to being #1/2 with the team at the top of the Western Conference standings.

Klingberg is injured or he wouldn't be in that position.

This team is not worse than the Young Guns era Flames. Surely anyone who watched both eras knows that. The NHL is overall much better than it was back then. An 18th placed team back in the mid 90's would be one of the worst teams in the league right now if not outright the worst. Quit trolling us Ricardo.

Russell is one of those players that can be really good in flashes. I'm not surprised that he is playing important minutes with Dallas right now and hopefully for him he can sustain it for a while.

News flash: Russell is a good player. He also has more ability than most to elevate his game at times like he did last year for Calgary.
Nothing is strange here.

The very worst teams , up til now, resulted in a 25th place finish in 1995-96 only 8 pts out of the playoffs and 12 pts clear of the basement.
In 1996-97 was worse 26th overall but 23 points out of last and 11 pts out of the playoffs.
This year train wreck 6 pts out of the basement and 13 pts out of the playoffs.
There is no metric that would show that this team is not the worst team in Flames history.
What makes it even worse is that this Flames team is spending very near to the top of the league, when the other past teams were spending about 50% of what the top spending teams were spending.

Just throwing this out there but maybe this years team has had the worst goaltending in flames history?

Beaten to the goaltending comment.
Pointless to suggest the Flames record has anything to do with anything else.

This team has the worst goaltending in Flames history.
The team itself is not the worst in history.
Also, look where a huge chunk of that cap spending is being distributed. It's all on veteran depth players who aren't very good, or out right terrible. I'd be more concerned if the big bulk of that was being spent on our "future" core while the team was still terrible, like up north in Edmonton.
Wideman, Smid, Raymond, Engelland, Stajan, Bollig, and two goalies who were putrid. All of those expire this off season or next except Stajan. That alone makes the fact the Flames were a cap team this year a non-factor going forward.

The team is considerably worse than the sum of the parts.
Either the Flames fans and management have vastly overrated the talent of the players..... disproved by Russell doing so well in Dallas, or the coaching staff is not getting the team to play to their potential or a combination of the two.
How can this roster be so bad? There are a whole pile of players who would be impact players (or at least core players) on other teams.....

I think it’s safe to say that half the general manager’s in the National Hockey League would trade their roster for our roster right now

Minnesota is probably the best first round match-up for the Stars. Colorado is the second-best; and Nashville would be third-best. Chicago or St Louis would be the least-desirable.
Nashville is also the least-likely first-round opponent for the Stars. The Predators are unlikely to move up into the top-3 in the Central or to drop down into the second Wild Card spot, so they're almost guaranteed (unless something drastic happens over the final few weeks of the season) to play the winner of the Pacific in the first round.

We are nothing like those Oilers teams or the young gun teams. As of right now, our core roster is at the moment.
Gaudreau-Monahan- X
X-Bennett- X
Frolik-Backlund-X
X-Bouma-X
Giordano-Brodie
Hamilton- X

As a barebones skeleton, it's pretty damn good. What's missing right now is the support around them. I'd argue that the four positions bolded are the difference between being a contender and a lottery team. All the others are exchangable.
As it's been talked to death here, we all know that the Flames #1 and #2 priorities this offseason are a goaltender and a big top six winger. If and when we get those positions solidified then we can give the room to our prospects to grow into the missing roles of our team (Namely a second top six winger and a top four defenseman.).
This team has a really bright future and I don't at all share the doom and gloom attitude from a rebuilding year of growing pains.
