I read it more as the "shove" can be considered intentional, and the collision itself may have been unavoidable under the circumstances.

Well that just means we will get 10 more total games of penalty time.

Umm, probably because this was a complex case both in terms of the incident itself and the wider issue of concussions in hockey?

The interesting thing to me about this decision is that by saying rule 40.3 was the applicable rule, the arbitrator believes Wideman deliberately made contact with Henderson. So the final ruling is basically "everybody on all sides was wrong."

probably considering the refs have no accountability...to even question them is a fine.

Guy got a fighting major the other night for getting sucker punched multiple times still wearing his gloves. Refs didn't even give an instigator.

and no accountability

Hopefully the Flames will be confused and sit him for another 10 games. We could only be so lucky.

In terms of equity, the league should at least refund the flames 9 games worth of Wideman's compensation. In terms of competitive redress, something is owed - I think a pick is fair.... the Oilers' 1st rounder.

I agree with the independent arbitrator's ruling.

One can expect the Flame's penalty killing to get an abundance of opportunities to ameliorate its less than stellar results, in the remaining games.

I agree with those who think the Flames need to be given a draft pick in compensation. Minimum 3rd round.

Ridiculous.

Is it not interesting that in the league's statement, they used the word opinion several times rather than decision? Could keep the door open.

For what?

This is a binding decision AFAIK.

I just read the entire decision. This James Oldham guy is bang on.

Although I get the feeling that, after reading his narrative in the decision, he thinks that Wideman shouldn't really have been suspended for any games considering it was an accident, he reduces it to 10 games to keep all parties somewhat satisfied.

I re-read that in the voice of Patrick Stewart.

Shove it Bettman.

They can present their case for judicial review, which I think they should.

This is exactly why players should be able to continue to play during the appeal process. I wish the NHL would just get its head out of its ass. So ridiculous.

Why do you think that? Genuinely interested.

I have no idea, just thought it was interesting. Also could just be a way to slight the arbitrator's decision. I find it derisive. But then, that's Gary.

God these Fan960 callers are hard to listen to on this topic. I made the mistake of checking out the HF thread on it, bunch of uninformed crap in there.

The NHL continues to be more and more of a complete and total clown show in my eyes with every passing year.

From the Devils 1st round pick taken away to then giving them back a pick later on, to the whole pathetic LA Kings get out of cap jail free card, and now this debacle.

is Wideman playing tonight?

I'd play him for sure before the NHL change it's mind.
