At worst, it would mean he misses tonight's game after which 20 has been served. Then it would be between the courts, the NHL, and the NHLPA. It would be strange for the NHL to go to court over this, considering the process agreed to in the CBA has been followed. But this whole thing has been strange.

The purposeful delaying of this so he served his full 20 regardless is so transparent it's embarrassing. How stupid do they think everyone is?
I'm far from a Bettman hater, but this whole process has been the definition of ridiculous.

It's not really my area, but I think the only way to appeal the arbitrators' decision (unless there's a right of further appeal in the CBA, which I doubt) is to claim he acted outside of his jurisdiction/terms of reference. I suppose if he said in his decision that there was an intent to injure but he was still imposing a penalty which is less than directed by the CBA, they could possibly make that argument.

I agree with this. Once the appeal process has reached a final verdict, then any suspensions kick in.

I think for the league it's never been about Dennis Wideman. They are looking to protect their own ass for the long-term, and clearly feel like this is an extremely important legal moment.

Arbitrator basically says that Bettman's conclusion that it was intentional is wrong

No one was taking him and that contract don't worry. This debacle is about the most notable thing he's accomplished all season imo.

Arbitrator nailed it. Not intentional, but you still have to be responsible for you actions. 10 games seems about right.

Does anyone else feel like a child caught in the middle of an ugly divorce? No matter what happens, the fans (and the team) get screwed.

The solution is clear. Remove Bettman and the league from the arbitration process completely and go straight to the neutral arbitrator. Also, the player should be re-instated until the arbitrator makes a decision.

News UpdateBob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie
It isn't done often, because standard is high, but arbitrator's decision can be attacked/appealed in courts. Will see if an option for NHL.
