Who cares if she was taking it to enhance performance back then when it wasn't a banned substance? Anyone else could have taken it too should the chose too. If it's not a banned substance, it's not cheating, it's about legitimately taking a supplement to gain a competitive edge. Not really any difference than say taking a recovery drink when working out.

Again, that's fine. I was pointing out she was talking a drug knowingly to enhance performance that was on the monitored list. All athletes have access to the banned list, so there's zero sympathy there. It was added in September to take effect in January.
I get there's more grey than black and white, but it's not like she didn't know the protein drink she used had a banned substance. She (along with at least 1/5th of Russian athletes) are taking a medication (not a supplement) that enhances performance but was not yet on a banned list. While not illegal, it was very unethical and I'm not sure why anyone would have sympathy for her situation.

So what does everyone think the punishment for Sharapova will be? She faces up to 4 years, but I imagine her team will fight that incredibly hard by trying to prove the medical condition she had made her taking of it legitimate.

Hingis got two years when she was caught with benzoylecgonine/cocaine. She denied taking it and I believe blamed the sample on some sort of contamination. However, she decided not to appeal because it would fall on deaf ears.

I think the fact that Maria took responsibility for it will make a difference in the length of suspension. That said, I still think you need to have a lengthy suspension to demonstrate that you are serious when it comes to PEDs. I think a one year suspension is appropriate punishment.

I don't think they'll try to fight the medical need fight. That would be extremely hard

The last high-profile athlete got caught "accidental doping" was Lee Chong Wei, the world #1 badminton player, for some anti-inflammatory medication. He only got a slap on the wrist backdated 8-month ban in late 2014.
So I think Sharapova will probably get something similar and will be back by maybe the US Open or next year's Aussie Open.

I just checked the live draw, he is in the draw (seeded 12th) and receives a first round bye. He is scheduled to play the winner of Nicolas Almagro and Inigo Cervantes (a battle of two Spaniards).

On the women's side, Genie is scheduled to play qualifier Risa Ozaki of Japan (currently ranked #125 in the world).

Maybe not such a bad thing having to struggle in this match and coming back for a set down, should hopefully give her confidence that she can battle back and prevail. Nicely done Genie.

Cervantes beat Almagro in three sets and will be the opponent for Milos in his upcoming 2nd round match.

Pospisil plays American Wildcard Jaime Donaldson (who I thought was a golfer) this afternoon. 19 years old ranked 158
Better beat him!

Also nice to see Del Potro back in action. Has a chance to be a big X factor this year if he can stay healthy and regain his form.

Milos is currently on court (with John Isner) playing doubles against Colin Fraser and Andy Murray. It's Team North America vs. Team GBR.
