Winter Classic Comes to STL
Only problem, its surprise against Chicago.
Quote:
The rivalry between the St. Louis Blues and Chicago Blackhawks has gotten so intense that it’s time to take it outside.
Busch Stadium, in fact.

Quote:
“We’ve seen how great the Winter Classics are,” Blues goalie Jake Allen said. “The energy and the passion, it’s a big thing for our city. We’ve been one of the best organizations in the NHL the last 50 years and next year is our 50th anniversary, so to be able to have that to look forward to next year is going to huge for us, our city, and the organization.
“It’s nine months away, but I’m looking forward to it already.”

I get that Chicago is huge for ratings, but that's enough already. Give someone else a chance.

Agreed,
Bring in another team St.Louis vs Nashville / Dallas would have been better. Its like the NHL is afraid of not having Chicago involved in the outdoor games.

It's like ratings are important to the NHL and Chicago playing is guaranteed to bring in good ratings. Curse you NHL and wanting to make money!
God, you guys whine about this every single time

Chicago vs St Louis makes sense and should be a fantastic game..... It's just some of the other outdoor games involving Chicago didn't make sense.

If we operate on the premise of it being a strict cash-grab then it should just be Chicago vs. New York every time.
Just make those two teams play their entire seasons in various outdoor stadiums around North America.

The NHL should try hosting outdoor games in warm weather climates like Miami and Texas and see if that will drum up more interests...

I thought for sure they would try a Panthers vs. Lightning game next season. Probably foolish of me.

I think the oilers should be the visitors at every single outdoor game, that way they could market it by saying "come watch your (home team) beat the edmonton oilers in an outdoor game" or something like that. I think the crowds would love to come out if they were guaranteed to see their team win.

So you're saying every team is basically the Harlem Globetrotters compared to the Oilers?
That seems fair, actually.

I think the problem is that teams want to host their own outdoor games, so they're reluctant to agree to be the visitor for one for fear of moving to the back of the list. As a result, we keep getting stuck with Chicago and Detroit every year.
After next season, there will only be 7 teams who haven't yet played in an outdoor game:
- Arizona
- Carolina
- Columbus
- Dallas
- Florida
- Nashville
- Tampa Bay
Also, Anaheim, Ottawa, Montreal, and the Rangers have been in outdoor games without being the home team. The Rangers played two games at Yankee Stadium as the road team and the Ducks were the road team at Dodger Stadium, so at least their local fans were able to go to the games if they wanted to without significant travel.

Almost! You see the Washington Generals arent actually trying to win whereas the Oilers are supposed to be.

There is a difference in playing in an outdoor game and playing in THE Jan 1 Winter Classic. How many teams have played in that?

2008: Pittsburgh @ Buffalo (Ralph Wilson Stadium)
2009: Detroit @ Chicago (Wrigley Field)
2010: Philadelphia @ Boston (Fenway Park)
2011: Washington @ Pittsburgh (Heinz Field)
2012: New York Rangers @ Philadelphia (Citizens Bank Park)
2013: Lockout
2014: Toronto @ Detroit (Michigan Stadium)
2015: Chicago @ Washington (Nationals Park)
2016: Montreal @ Boston (Gillette Stadium)
Jan. 1 2017: Detroit @ Toronto (BMO Field)
Jan. 2 2017: Chicago @ St. Louis (Busch Stadium)
They're calling the Det @ Tor game the Centennial Classic, I think to celebrate the Leafs 100th? Then the next day is the usual Winter Classic, but a day late.

So, depending on if you count the Centennial Classic as another Winter Classic of sorts (probably fair to say) then the tally in 10 games looks like:
Detroit: 3
Chicago: 3
Boston: 2 (both at home no less)
Pittsburgh: 2
Philadelphia: 2
Toronto: 2
Washington: 2
Montreal: 1
New York Rangers: 1
Buffalo: 1
St. Louis: 1
