His hiring for HNIC is akin to ESPN hiring Ryan Seacrest to host Monday Night Football. A lot of hardened sports fans simply aren't going to get behind hiring a non-sports entertainment personality to host a beloved sports institution. Now that said I find him tolerable but he probably wouldn't have been my first pick that's for sure.
He started as a sports guy on sports radio but yeah most see him as a non-sports guy.
Right now I'm more interested in the Blue Jays than I am the Flames.
A year ago that sentence would have been unfathomable. The last time I cared about the Blue Jays or baseball was the 90s. But, the hype around them started to grow and I watched a game and it was freaking awesome and here we are.

NBC is paying not even close to Sportsnet and they can make the Blackhawks play at noon.

The teams do have a fair bit of input into the schedule. Sportsnet does run all day hockey sometimes, but there are teams who aren't hindered as much by afternoon games compared to the Flames and they are the teams likely to get the early slots in an all day game setup. Flames more likely to be playing on a road trip in the east in such a scenario and end up at 5 pm, or the 8 pm slot at home or away to Pacific teams.

How old are you? I'm 30 and everyone I know in real life loves the guy - we all pretty much grew up with him. The only bad things I have ever heard about him have been on this board. He is great.
I was very skeptical when I heard that the dude from Much Music was going to be the new Ron McLean.
But then I saw him do it, and it turns out he's actually pretty good. He knows his stuff, both in regards to hockey and in regards to hosting a TV show.
Everything else about Rogers ticks me right off, though.

He's been referred to as a non sports guy and "the guy from Muchmusic", which fails to mention that he started out in sports and hosted a successful talkshow for years after leaving muchmusic, before being hired for HNIC.

Didn't he also have a CNN show (briefly)? Also as for him being young I believe he's in his 40s now. I think Sportsnet has bigger on air personality issues than him as host. He's close to the bottom of what needs to be changed. But since he stands out as an outsider to old school hockey fans, he takes most of the heat.
Yeah, it was only one season. It was actually a neat show, but it was 11pm so he never really had much chance to grow an audience, plus they ignored a really big strength of his which is actually talking news/politics.
They made his show a pure interview show, and from what I've read it was Larry King that pushed hard to bring him down based on interviews between the two when King was in Canada. On one interview I remember King actually failed to answer one of George's questions, instead just going on about how he's a genuine talent and so good at his job.
Or as Canadian hockey fans would say "that guy from Much Music", haha.

can get creative here instead of 41 games being all the same. People here argue that a tuesday night game is like a thursday night game is like a saturday night game.
Afternoon games suck because afternoon games suck. And if you have to "make them more affordable", you are doing so only because you are hosing demand in your own product.
Sorry Girly. I get that you like to be a contrarian, but this is just a bad idea that the market doesn't want.
