I would agree with this.
It seems if the Flames aren't playing on a Saturday night, I'm less likely to watch HNIC than I've ever been.
Sportsnet's Wednesday Night hockey pales in comparison to what TSN did. For some reason, Sportsnet is also completely inconsistent in their Wednesday night broadcasts.
Hometown hockey in Sundays is just awful and boring, filled with no analysis and only Ron MacLean's one line anecdotes.
Sportsnet has been very bad for hockey in Canada. The only positive additions they've made are Hrudey and Ball on PBP for Calgary.

I've been living in Ottawa for 5 years and have become slightly interested in the Sens. Once in a while I'll try to tune in and watch a game on gamecentre.... and BAM! Regional blackout in effect. So now I don't even bother trying to watch Sens games. Just stick to Flames games

Just awful by SN hiring that tool.

I think he's the perfect host. He basically just introduces segments and guides the conversation while letting the personalities speak and not getting to involved.
One of the few bright spots IMO.

The most telling point for me of how bad Sportsnet struggles is that despite having their guys all over TV for the last year and a half, when viewers have a choice on trade deadline day, they overwhelmingly still go to TSN to watch.
They just don't have enough likable people on their panels. And no idea what the point of having Ron McLean and a production team fly around the country to show local stories that no one could possibly care about except for the people in that town.

Here’s my conclusion, Bettman Inc. has been solely focused on the health of and potential to grow the game in the USA that the audience has started to fizzle in Canada. They’ve taken their eye off the puck.
|
How has growing the game in the USA resulted in the Canadians teams being really bad? What should the league do differently?

I can't stress enough how awful it looks on Sportsnet to have Kypreos & Maclean yelling over one another almost every time they share the screen. That and most analysts they have are either dull, unpolished TV personalities (Sutter) or abrasive (see above). Also the commentators during the game (save for Flames broadcasts - though they have their struggles too) are poor and mistake prone. Why would people tune in consistently when they're actively pushed away any time they do watch?

I would bet the lower ratings if true, is directly associated to the struggling teams in Canada.
Ratings are going to take a big hit when the playoffs start.....

Sportsnet needs more hockey programming prior to games. I used to always watch shows like That's Hockey on TSN and then just end up staying on the channel for the game right after which was often a random game I never cared about like Flyers vs Islanders. Point is, they would grab my attention with a pretty high energy hockey talk show and likely earn me as a viewer for the next couple hours.
Sportsnet needs to commit to hockey a little more in terms of programming time dedicated to non-game content.

What's with all the darts on TV anyways? It's on every weekday at noon. The spot that used to have Hockey Central @ Noon, which I wish they'd bring back.

I'm definitely Flames only right now, but it's schedule as opposed to Sportsnet. I think Strombo is good, and I'm not sure why people don't like him, other than perhaps his mannerisms/style rub people the wrong way.
That being said, it's definitely a lesser product than it was on CBC.

All 7 Canadian teams are out of the playoffs and sucking ***.
Ratings are down in Canada.
We need a federal inquiry!

They could easily get a better panel using their regional people. Cory Hirsch and Colby Armstrong aren't super polished but they come off as down to earth and someone you'd want to talk with. Leah Hextall knows her stuff and is good as a host.
Kypreos comes off as smug, Hrudey is much better in the booth or back when he was in a one on one situation like he was on the CBC HNIC Under the Mask stuff. Damian Cox is just unlikable. Friedman is good.

It's usually done by time I get home from work and if I forgot to PVR it then my whole night is basically ruined.

With the Flames struggles, I find myself simply not going out of my way to watch games this year. I might watch bits here and there but I just don't find myself entertained by the product this year. And any non Flames games? Forget about it.
A big reason why I am no longer tuning in is the production value of the Sportsnet broadcasts. The audio is terrible, the same crappy ads play 25 times a game (I don't care about how much cheese is on a Panago pizza nor will I ever use Sport Select), and uninformed analysis outside of the PBP call. If the Flames were stuck with a terrible PBP duo like Quinn and Remenda, I wouldn't watch at all.
Once the intermission comes on, I'm immediately switching the channel to something else. IMO, Leah Hextall is great but I haven't seen a single analyst I enjoy. None of Hirsch, Jaffe, Shannon, Cox or Armstrong provide any meaningful insight into the game. Sutter is okay but that's about it.
Given the current path of my interest I won't even know who the Flames are in 10 years.

Yeah I bought the single team package on GCL and I don't miss watching non-Calgary games at all. Better things to spend my time on I guess now that I'm older.

Kypreos, Maclean, Cox, etc. These guys are BAD analysts. Some of them are outright trolls (Cox). Why would anyone want to listen to these guys? Friedman is the only one I like at all. Might as well just have him and Stroumbo and lose the rest.

Kypreos has grown on me. I have no problems with Strombo as host. I don't watch Maclean at all as Montreal or Calgary rarely play on Sundays. If I see Cox I turn the channel. Friedman is excellent.

I change the channel as soon as Sportsnet's intermission panels come on. There's no chance I would watch a half hour show of that.
